Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis will stop sending migrants to New York City, Chicago and other major Democrat-run cities after mayors expressed outrage at the plan in recent weeks.
Polis had agreed to work with local authorities in Denver to help send migrants to their final destinations. While Colorado is not a border state, it has seen a major influx of migrants seeking passage to elsewhere in the country. Mayors Eric Adams of New York City and Lori Lightfoot of Chicago called on Polis to end his assistance last week as their cities also struggle with a surge in migrants.
“People fleeing violence and oppression in search of a better life for themselves and their families deserve our respect not political games and we are grateful we have been able to assist migrants to reach their final destination,” Polis had said of the program. “We refuse to keep people against their will if they desire to travel elsewhere.”
Adams and Lightfoot wrote to Polis in a joint letter, urging him to halt his bussing program after it sent just a few hundred migrants.

“We have seen your statements in the media that you are simply accommodating the wishes of migrants to come to cities like New York City and Chicago,” the pair wrote. “However, you are sending migrants and families to New York City and Chicago that do not have any ties, family members or community networks to welcome them.”
Adams was outraged at Polis’ bussing program during a press conference appearance last week, comparing it to similar programs that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis used to flood his city with some 30,000 migrants last year.

“One time we had to deal with Republican governors sending migrants to New York. Now we’re dealing with Democratic governors sending migrants to New York,” Adams said Wednesday.
“What’s callous is how we have been ignored as a city. And now I have to make tough decisions on the resources of New York … it is time for the federal government to step up,” he added.
Adams’ plea for federal assistance comes as President Biden makes his first trip to the U.S.-Mexico border Sunday. The White House also unveiled a handful of policies aimed at stemming the flow at the border last week. They include expanding a humanitarian parole program for Venezuelan nationals to include Haitians, Cubans and Nicaraguans, as well as increasing refugee resettlements.
Biden acknowledged the changes aren’t up to the task, however.
“These actions alone that I’m going to announce today aren’t going to fix our entire immigration system but they can help us a good deal in managing what is a difficult challenge,” he said Thursday.
There are six remaining Republican members-elect preventing Rep.-elect Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., from becoming the next speaker of the House of Representatives following the 13th round of voting Friday.
Friday’s ballots have been the most positive for McCarthy so far in the drawn-out process of electing a new speaker, as 14 of the 20 initial members-elect opting not to support him have flipped their votes and quieted concerns he wouldn’t be able to reach the threshold required to be elected.
Those members still choosing not to vote for McCarthy include Rep.-elect Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., Rep.-elect Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., Rep.-elect Eli Crane, R-Ariz., Rep.-elect Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., Rep.-elect Bob Good, R-Va., and Rep.-elect Matt Rosendale, R-Mont.
Rep.-elect Andy Harris, R-Md., was the sole holdout to flip to McCarthy in the 13th round of voting after 13 holdouts and one “present” voting member flipped their votes in the 12th round.
McCarthy received a total of 214 votes in the 13th ballot to Rep.-elect Hakeem Jeffries’, D-N.Y., 212 votes and Rep.-elect Jim Jordan’s, R-Ohio, six votes. Two Republicans were not present to cast their votes due to medical and family reasons, but are expected to return by the end of the day to cast their votes for McCarthy as the rounds of voting are likely to continue.
With those additional votes, McCarthy is expected to have 216 total votes, meaning just two of the six remaining holdouts would need to flip their support in order to reach the required threshold to be elected speaker.

Christmas kicked off in Washington, D.C. Friday morning as the 2022 Capitol Christmas Tree arrived at the U.S. Capitol.
‘Ruby,’ the name of this year’s tree, is a 78-foot tall Red Spruce from North Carolina, and it was harvested in the Pigsah National Forest.
The tree and its traveling crew left North Carolina for the Capitol during the first week of November. Live tracking of the tree’s journey began Nov. 5 and ended with the final stop on Nov. 18.
Ruby the Red Spruce made 16 stops along the way and at each one fans could sign a banner, participate in arts and crafts, and learn more about America’s national forests.

The tree was delivered to its normal spot on the Capitol’s West Lawn at 6 a.m. Friday. Crews spent most of the morning getting the tree off the truck and into its upright position on Capitol Hill.

The official lighting ceremony will take place on Nov. 30.
According to the tree’s Twitter page, Ruby will be lit by Catcuce Micco Tiger (Coche), a fourth grader from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in Cherokee, N.C.
California state Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat, said that he remembers Paul Pelosi’s alleged attacker from nudist protests in 2013 relating to the implementation of a San Francisco ban on public nudity.
David DePape, 42, is accused of attacking Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in their San Francisco home early on Friday morning.
San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said DePape is being charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary and other felony charges in relation to the attack, which took place after 2 a.m.
Police were responding to a wellbeing check when officers found DePape and Paul Pelosi struggling with a hammer, according to Scott, adding that the officers saw DePape take the hammer away from Paul Pelosi, who then “violently assaulted” him.
According to a law enforcement source, the suspect was shouting, “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?”
Wiener, a California state senator in the San Francisco area, told Fox News Digital that he remembers DePape from pro-nudist protests in 2013.
“[DePape] looked very familiar to me from when we were dealing with public nudity issues in 2012/2013,” Wiener said.
The protests came after Wiener sponsored legislation banning public nudity in 2012, according to ABC7.
Weiner said that DePape was associated with Gypsy Taub, who is a nudist activist in Berkeley.
“[DePape] was associated with this woman by the name of Gypsy Taub, who was like this very creepy person who, in addition to her activism around public nudity, she was a 9/11 denier,” Weiner said. “She was the ringleader, and she was extremely aggressive and creepy. … And I think he was one of the people in her work.”

The California state senator said that Taub and DePape weren’t considered “regular” nudist activists, but “they were more aggressive” and “they were creepy.”
“I just want to, you know, be very clear, that they were in a different category than the regular [nudist activists],” Wiener said.
DePape was tackled by police officers, who then took him into custody. Police are investigating a possible motive for the attack.
Drew Hammill, spokesman for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said in a statement on Friday afternoon that Paul Pelosi is expected to make a full recovery after undergoing surgery to repair a skull fracture as well as other injuries.
“Earlier this morning, Paul Pelosi was attacked at home by an assailant who acted with force, and threatened his life while demanding to see the Speaker,” Hammill said. “Mr. Pelosi was admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where he underwent successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands. His doctors expect a full recovery.”
It certainly didn’t start off well for the Philadelphia Phillies, but double-digit runs will cure just about anything.
The Phillies are now one win away from winning the National League pennant after their 10-6 win over the in Game 4 of the NLCS.
The Phillies made it a bullpen game, and Bailey Falter retired the first two guys he faced. But Manny Machado launched a solo home run to left-center to put the Padres up early. But the Padres kept it coming – the next two Padres got on base, and Brandon Drury drove them both in with a double. Rob Thomson yanked Falter, but Ha-Seong Kim had an RBI single off Connor Brogdon to put San Diego up 4-0.

But the Phillies answered back immediately. After Kyle Schwarber led off the bottom half of the inning with a single, Rhys Hoskins belted a two-run homer to cut the deficit in half. J.T. Realmuto then walked, and he scored all the way from first on Bryce Harper’s double. Neither pitcher record three outs – in fact, Padres’ Mike Clevinger didn’t record one.

The second and third innings were silent, but the Phillies put the tying run on base in the fourth with a leadoff double from Nick Castellanos, and Bryson Stott drove him in with a single.
In the fifth, Juan Soto put San Diego back in front of a two-run homer, but Hoskins answered right back with his second two-run homer of the night, tying the game up at six. In fact, the bottom of the fifth was almost a carbon copy of the bottom of the first. Realmuto again scored from first on a Harper double, this one giving the Phillies their first lead of the night. Castellanos then drove Harper in with a single up the middle. In the sixth, Schwarber hit a solo home run, making it a 9-6 Phillies lead, and Realmuto joined the fun with a solo homer of his own in the seventh.
Phillies relievers – in this case, non-starters – combined for 8.1 innings of two-run ball, with those runs only coming on Soto’s homer. They allowed just five hits and struck out eight while walking one.
Zack Wheeler tossed a gem in Game 1, and he’ll look to do the same in Game 5 on Sunday afternoon to send the Phillies to their first Fall Classic since 2009. Yu Darvish will look to send the series back to San Diego.
First pitch is at 2:37 p.m.
