Bear meat for dinner? Follow these steps to prevent parasitic infection, CDC says

Eating undercooked meat from wild game animals can cause a rare illness known as trichinellosis, health officials have warned.

Six cases of the parasitic disease were reported by multiple family members from Arizona, Minnesota and South Dakota.

The family members shared a meal that included undercooked meat from a black bear, as reported in the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

KITCHEN DISASTERS INCLUDING STOVETOP FIRES AND SMELLY MICROWAVES: WHAT TO DO WHEN THINGS GO WRONG

“It is critically important to remember to properly cook any raw meat, as inadequately undercooked meat has a potential for both trichinosis and other infectious illnesses,” Dr. Aaron Glatt, chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital on Long Island, New York, told Fox News Digital.

Meat containing Trichinella worms may also cross-contaminate other food items, such as vegetables, that are cooked alongside it, the CDC warned.

“People who consume meat from wild game animals should be aware that adequate cooking is the only reliable way to kill the parasites that cause trichinellosis, which can be resistant to freezing,” Shama Cash-Goldwasser, epidemic intelligence service officer at the CDC, told Fox News Digital.

Experts shared a summary of the cases reported so far — plus, tips for preventing trichinellosis.

In early July 2022, a 29-year-old man, whose name was not shared, started to feel ill a few days after sharing a meal during a family reunion in South Dakota.

HIGH LEVELS OF RESISTANT BACTERIA FOUND IN UNCOOKED MEATS AND RAW DOG FOOD: ‘RED FLAG’

He was hospitalized after returning to Minnesota, complaining of fever, severe muscle aches and swelling around the eyes. Blood tests revealed high levels of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell that can indicate a worm infection.

The man’s most recent meal had included kabobs made from the meat of a black bear, the report stated.

The black bear was originally harvested by one of the family members in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, in May 2022 — then frozen in a home freezer for 45 days at an unknown temperature.

The bear meat was then thawed, grilled with vegetables and served “inadvertently” rare, the report said.

The man was treated with albendazole, an anti-parasitic medication. An antibody blood test confirmed he had trichinellosis.

The CDC launched an investigation, finding that six people from the gathering — with their ages ranging from 12 to 62 — had symptoms consistent with trichinellosis.

Among the six people, four had consumed both the bear meat and vegetables, but two only ate the vegetables. Three were hospitalized, but all recovered.

MEAT CONTAMINATED WITH E. COLI COULD CAUSE HALF A MILLION URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS EACH YEAR, STUDY FINDS

The CDC found live worms in the remaining bear meat.

Approximately 1% to 24% of black bears in Canada and Alaska are infected with trichinellosis, per the report.

“Trichinellosis is the disease caused by a parasitic worm called Trichinella,” Scott Roberts, M.D., associate medical director of infection prevention at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, told Fox News Digital.

“It is very rare in humans and associated with eating raw and undercooked meats, particularly pork and wild game.”

RAW DIET FOR DOGS IS TAKING OVER TIKTOK, BUT WHAT DOES YOUR VETERINARIAN THINK OF THE LATEST TREND?

Some examples of wild game that may cause disease include wild boar, wildcat, fox, wolf, seal or walrus — but people can also get infected from homemade jerky and sausage, according to the CDC.

There are approximately 10,000 cases worldwide every year, but only about 15 cases in the U.S. annually.

The disease historically has been linked to eating uncooked pork, but a better understanding of proper food preparation has reduced those occurrences, Glatt noted.

Current regulations around raising commercially farmed pigs have also helped to lower the risk of trichinellosis in the U.S., the CDC noted.

Although infection is rare, it is possible after eating even a small amount of raw or undercooked meat, the agency warned.

The severity of symptoms depends on how much of the parasite is ingested, Roberts told Fox News Digital.

After the contaminated meat is consumed, the stomach produces acid that causes larvae to be released, the CDC stated.

These larvae then invade the small intestine, which may cause gastrointestinal symptoms.

After one week, the larvae travel in the bloodstream, sometimes making their way into the muscle — which can cause muscle pain, according to the CDC.

“Symptoms can range from none at all, to GI issues (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and muscle/joint pain,” Roberts said.

One hallmark symptom is swelling of the face, especially around the eyes, per the CDC.

Occasionally, the worms may also travel to the heart, lungs or brain, which can lead to problems with coordination, cardiovascular issues or breathing issues.

Most cases will not require treatment, but antiparasitic therapy can be given if symptoms are severe, Roberts said.

To prevent trichinellosis, Cash-Goldwasser of the CDC recommends cooking wild game meat to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius) and verifying the temperature with a meat thermometer.

Safe handling of raw meat, including separation of raw or undercooked meat and its juices from other foods, is also recommended to prevent cross-contamination,” she told Fox News Digital.

The agency also advises against sampling meat until it has been confirmed to be fully cooked — and recommends freezing pork less than six inches thick for 20 days at 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Some wild game animals are freeze-resistant, which means freezing may not effectively kill all worms.

Salting, drying, smoking or microwaving meat also does not effectively kill worms, per the CDC.

People should always remember to wash their hands with soap and warm water before and after handling raw meat — and to clean meat grinders and all other kitchen items thoroughly after each use, the agency advised.

CNN's Zakaria says first debate with Trump will be 'make-or-break' for Biden's campaign

CNN host Fareed Zakaria argued that the upcoming first debate between President Biden and former President Trump might decide the current president’s chances at a second term.

“I think it‘s a big moment for Biden. I think it’s in some ways a make-or-break,” Zakaria said during a guest appearance on “CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta.” “He has a lot more to gain or lose from this.”

CNN host Jim Acosta recalled Zakaria’s recent viral commentary, noting that the future of Biden’s presidency is in question as his polling drops against Trump. Acosta asked if Biden could “use these debates to turn that around.”

Zakaria said Biden “has to approach this as if he‘s the underdog, as if he‘s coming from behind, which is all true, but it‘s hard for the president of the United States to think that way. It‘s one of the reasons presidents have typically done badly in debates, particularly in the first debate.”

BIDEN ROASTED FOR ‘FREUDIAN SLIP’ REFERRING TO IMMIGRATION INFLUX OF ‘HISPANIC VOTERS’

Zakaria argued that when someone serves as president, they are surrounded by people who defer to their opinion, citing then-President Obama’s surprising first debate against Mitt Romney, now a GOP Utah senator.

“Obama — who‘s a very good orator — did very badly in the first debate against Romney because the president has been spending his time governing, he’s been spending his time with his Cabinet and his White House staff, all of whom defer to him. Every time he walks into the room, the Marine band plays, every time he walks under a tarmac, he‘s walking on Air Force One or Marine One. It‘s not an atmosphere conducive to recognizing that people can disagree with you,” Zakaria said. “You don‘t realize that you have to punch and counter-punch.”

BIDEN’S BORDER POLICY ISN’T INCOMPETENCE, IT’S BY DESIGN: EX-ICE CHIEF

“So Biden has to take this opportunity to be very feisty,” Zakaria argued. “The thing I pointed out in that commentary was he is really behind on the question of who is more competent, and I believe that there‘s a 25-point drop from the 2020 rates for Biden. That is about energy, that‘s about your ability to show that you‘re in command, you‘re in control, so it‘s a big moment for Biden.”

“I think it‘s a historic opportunity for him,” he concluded. “There‘s a great moment for CNN. I think this will be one of the most widely and closely watched debates in American history.”

Trump says he'll testify at NYC hush money trial: 'I tell the truth'

Former President Trump has said he will testify at his upcoming hush money trial in New York City.

“I’m testifying. I tell the truth. I mean, all I can do is tell the truth,” Trump told reporters at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Friday. “And the truth is, that there’s no case.”

He’s set to appear at the trial, which stemmed from accusations that he falsified business records to cover up a payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election, on Monday.

The ex-president and current 2024 White House candidate made the announcement alongside Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Fla., who was in Palm Beach to roll out a legislative package aimed at bolstering election integrity.

FBI interrogates Americans over social media posts 'every day, all day long,' agent says

FBI agents told an Oklahoma woman that the agency spends “every day, all day long” questioning people about their social media posts when they arrived at her house to ask about posts she made online.

Rolla Abdeljawad, of Stillwater, was told by FBI agents who showed up at her home on Wednesday that Facebook had handed over screenshots of her posts.

Abdeljawad told the agents she did not want to talk and asked them to show their badges on camera, but the agents refused, video posted to the social media platform X by her lawyer, Hassan Shibly, shows. The woman wrote on Facebook that she later confirmed with local police that the people who showed up at her home were actually FBI agents.

“Facebook gave us a couple of screenshots of your account,” one agent wearing a gray shirt was heard saying in the video.

Abdeljawad replied, “So we no longer live in a free country, and we can’t say what we want?”

“No, we totally do,” another agent wearing a red shirt said. “That’s why we’re not here to arrest you or anything. We do this every day, all day long. It’s just an effort to keep everybody safe and make sure nobody has any ill will.”

The woman then said, “All I’ve done is exercise my right as an American citizen on a public social media platform with my personal opinions.”

It is unclear which posts caught the attention of the FBI, but Abdeljawad has made a series of posts in the past week expressing frustration about the ongoing war in Gaza between Israeli forces and Hamas terrorists, including referring to Israel as “Israhell.”

“Israhelli terrorist filth,” she said in one post. “They think Ramadan is a weakness for Muslims not, realizing Ramadan is the strength. #FreePalestine May Allah destroy every single despicable zionist, their supporters and backers. Ameen.”

Abdeljawad’s Facebook timeline is also public, meaning the FBI agents could have accessed her posts themselves without requesting screenshots from Facebook.

FORMER FBI AGENT ACCUSED OF ‘REVENGE PORN’ WITH HIDDEN CAMERAS COULD HAVE UPWARDS OF 80 VICTIMS: REPORT

One of her posts even warned the Muslim community and people who are pro-Palestinian to be wary of the U.S. government monitoring their activity.

“Don’t fall for their games. Our community is being watched & they are just waiting for any reason to round us up,” Abdeljawad wrote on March 24. “If you’re Muslim and/or pro-pal consider all your media accounts, Google searches, mail, messenger, local mosques & political events monitored. #NYC #usa #PoliceState #FreePalestine”

The official policy of Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is to give law enforcement Facebook data following a court order, subpoena, search warrant or emergency situation involving “imminent harm to a child or risk of death or serious physical injury to any person.”

In the first half of 2023, the social media giant received nearly 74,000 requests from law enforcement and handed over data 88% of the time, according to Meta’s website.

Abdeljawad said in a post on Thursday that her lawyer does not believe Facebook sent the FBI the screenshots of her posts.

“Rather, it seems like a fishing expedition,” she wrote. “I do not fear them. My only concern as, I told the cop is that, someone in my state will do something or that they would and then use my posts in a malicious attempt to ‘smear’ me. Just *remember, I am a Muslim, an obligated protector of creation. I enjoin what is good and forbid what is wrong.”

Shibly said in the caption on the social media video that Abdeljawad made the correct decision to refuse to speak without a lawyer, to not allow them in her house and to record the interaction. But, he says, she should not have gone outside her house to talk to the agents.

“You have the right never to speak to the FBI without a lawyer,” he said.

Left-wing activist says it's 'so weird' that Passover only about Jews, not others' 'subjugation'

A progressive activist drew attention on social media after she argued the suffering of Jews isn’t “exceptional” as she explained her support for Palestinians in light of the Israel-Hamas war.

There have been “so many similar genocides,” Nicole Carty told The New York Times Magazine last week. She said at another point that it’s “so weird” that the Jewish holiday of Passover is solely about “Jewish subjugation.”

An activist who leads a group pushing for reparations for Black Americans, Carty was leery of the growing movement to unite Jewish and Black progressives in protesting Israel’s actions in Gaza since the October 7 Hamas attack.

“The question for White Jews is to what degree the assimilation into whiteness means that you do not disrupt White supremacy and oppression for all of us?” Carty told NYT Magazine.

RACIST CLAIMS OF ‘WHITE ISRAEL’ STOKE HATRED, ENDANGER JEWS AND DENY MULTIRACIAL REALITY, SAY EXPERTS

Black Americans see their own history of oppression being played out in the Middle East with Palestinians in Gaza, according to Carty, who has also worked with the, far-left, anti-Israel Jewish group IfNotNow.

“The Palestinian experience activates Black trauma,” she said. While the activist has allied with Jewish groups in the past on racial justice causes, she worries about White Jews’ level of commitment to the Palestinian cause.

Carty said pro-Palestinian Jewish allies like IfNotNow rubbed her the wrong way by organizing vigils for victims in the days following the October 7 Hamas attacks.

“My Jewish friends wanted to mourn,” Carty said. “That felt right to them. But that didn’t feel right to me. I didn’t go to that action. It didn’t meet the moment. I tried to be compassionate, but we lost time in really speaking out in a politically targeted way against the slaughter of Palestinians that we could all see happening.”

HARVARD FACULTY, STAFF FORM GROUP FOR ‘JUSTICE IN PALESTINE,’ SLAM ‘UNFOLDING GENOCIDE IN GAZA’

The Jewish group prayed for both Israelis and Palestinians killed, but Carty claimed the incident was part of the Jewish tendency for “trauma myopia.”

She urged Jews to recognize that their “history and relation to trauma and dehumanization has been exceptionalized [sic].”

“I’ve been to a lot of Passover celebrations,” she added, “and it’s so weird that the story is only of Jewish subjugation, even though subjugation is still so present for other people.”

“Black people still haven’t had their histories honored. We are still gaslit about the impact of slavery and the continued impacts of White supremacy,” Carty argued.

The activist was hopeful for a “multiracial democracy” where “all people have equal rights and all religions are respected” in the Middle East and compared the conflict to fights over slavery and Civil Rights in the United States

Carty’s remarks on Passover and other topics raised eyebrows on X.

Some critics have pushed back on progressive narratives portraying Israel as a White oppressor in the Middle East as “wildly inaccurate.”

“The reality is that in Israel you will see Jews who look Black, brown, Asian, African and everything in between,” Dan Feferman, a former national security adviser to the Israel Defense Ministry, told Fox News Digital.

“The mischaracterization is wildly inaccurate and unfortunately drives animosity in the Middle East and around the world against Israel,” he added.

Carty did not respond to requests for comment by Fox News Digital.

‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ star John Schneider says AI cannot simulate ‘heart’ and ‘soul’

“The Dukes of Hazzard” star John Schneider isn’t afraid of artificial intelligence.

“What AI does not have and what AI cannot simulate is a heart, is a soul. So, I’m not afraid of AI,” he told Fox News Digital.

Schneider gave an analogy, comparing the technology to artificial dairy coffee creamer, to explain why he’s not concerned.

“A lot of people are talking about AI like it’s this terrible, terrible thing that’s coming in. I think it’s powdered cream at best,” he said. “You know, it’s Coffee-mate. It will never be half-and-half. It’ll never even be 2% [milk]. It’s always going to be powdered cow.”

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

He continued, “Now, it may be good, it may taste good, but it ain’t milk and it ain’t half-and-half. It is not a dairy product. So, I’m not concerned about it. I don’t think anybody should be concerned about it.”

Artificial intelligence loomed large over Hollywood this year, with the technology being a key issue in negotiations during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes over the summer and fall.

WGA ratified their contract on Sept. 25 and SAG-AFTRA ratified theirs on Dec. 5; both expire in 2026.

Like many other actors and creatives in entertainment, Schneider feels that the human element will never be fully removed from the creative process.

“When the rubber hits the road, great content comes from inspiration, which I think comes when your heart and your soul bump up against each other,” the 63-year-old said. “And that’s not going to happen in AI.”

He added with a laugh, “So there, take that, AI! I’m not worried about you. You Coffee-mate, powder-cow phony!”

Schneider is currently starring in the new family-friendly Christmas comedy “Jingle Smells,” which was executive-produced by FOX News Channel’s Sean Hannity and Logan Sekulow. Released on Nov. 23 on Rumble, the holiday film also stars Eric Roberts, Ben Davies, Brad Stine, Jim Breuer, Victoria Jackson and Dylan Postl.

“People are excited to be able to sit and watch and enjoy a movie with their whole family again,” Schneider said. “Those opportunities really aren’t around anymore.”

He continued, “‘Jingle Smells’ is in fact one of those. And I think it’s going to be around for years and years to come. It’s a very fun movie.”

The actor also recently launched John Schneider’s Revenuer’s Reserve Premium Moonshine, which sold out on the first day of its launch this month.

“We’ve done now two runs of 10,000 bottles. And they’re gone in three weeks,” he said. “That’s 20,000 bottles apparently in three weeks. It’s crazy.”

Trump calls out immigration crisis during Iowa caucus rally, says he will keep world peaceful, safe

Former President Donald Trump rallied voters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, during a “Commit to Caucus” campaign event Saturday, focusing on his agenda and calling out “the worst, most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America.”

“We don’t like corrupt politicians like Joe Biden. Without question, this is the worst president, most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America without question,” Trump exclaimed, in anticipation of next month’s Iowa GOP presidential caucuses. “And I promise you this, if you put me back in the White House there, rain will be over and America will be a free nation once again.”

When speaking about keeping America safe, Trump said he would immediately implement travel restrictions on terror-plagued countries.

“I will immediately restore and expand the Trump travel ban on entry from terror-plagued countries and I will implement strong ideological screening on all immigrants as we have no choice,” he said. “If you hate America, if you want to abolish Israel, if you sympathize with jihad[ists], then we don’t want you in our country, and you’re not going to come into our country.”

Adding to his remarks on a travel ban and current unrest in the Middle East, Trump pointed to the historic Abraham Accords, and described how he would make sure there was worldwide peace once again if elected.

“So for four straight years, I kept America safe. I kept Ukraine safe. None of this stuff would have happened. And I kept the entire world safe,” Trump said.

DESANTIS STOPS IN ALL 99 IOWA COUNTIES, BUT WILL IT HELP HIM CLOSE THE GAP WITH TRUMP, STAY AHEAD OF HALEY?

Trump added he would do everything in his power to keep the United States out of a war.

“I will prevent World War III. I will prevent it. On my first day back in the White House, I will terminate every open-border policy of the Biden administration, stop the invasion on our southern border, and begin the largest domestic deportation operation in American history,” Trump said.
