Seattle Fire Dept. facing mass staff shortage after vaccine mandate: 'Gambling' with lives

A former Seattle firefighter issued a stark public safety warning over the department’s massive staffing shortage as it allegedly refuses to rehire those fired over the COVID vaccine mandate.

Andy Pittman worked for the city of Seattle for more than six years before he was fired for refusing to take the vaccine. He joined “Fox & Friends First” to discuss how the shortage is impacting public safety in the Emerald City.

“The city administration and Chief Scoggins are definitely gambling with the city’s lives,” Pittman told Ashley Strohmier on Tuesday. “It’s been shown before that one to two units out of service can have a pretty significant impact in the growth of the fire.”

SEATTLE REVERSES COURSE ON DEFUNDING POLICE AS CRIME RAVAGES LOCALS: ‘A HUGE CRISIS’

“Fires are growing at a much more rapid rate, so we have an even smaller amount of time to make a rapid response and get the fire out and rescue victims,” he continued. “So it’s very imperative that they start to play by the rules and act with integrity, which they haven’t up to this point.”

The city reportedly refused to rehire individuals fired over the vaccine, but is willing to entertain employing those who “resigned, retired, or was separated for medical or disability reasons but not granted disability retirement may request return of their name to a supplemental register to be considered with the open graded eligible register for the classification or rank,” The Post Millennial reported.

The staffing crisis has been so severe that certain fire units have allegedly been “browned out,” a term Pittman described as an effort to redistribute firefighters to mitigate the significant staffing deficiencies across the city.

SEATTLE TIMES COLUMNIST IRKS PROGRESSIVE READERS WITH FOCUS ON SOARING CRIME AFTER GOVERNMENT DEFUNDED POLICE

“Browning out units is a term used when there’s not enough units to cover the city, and so when there’s not enough units, they have to shut some units down and start shuffling people to other units in the city to make sure that other areas are covered,” he said. “So rather than dealing with the staffing shortages, Chief Scoggins is focused on terms like brownout.”

As of July 2022, there were more than 100 staff vacancies, which could take several months and even up to one year to fill, according to Seattle radio host Ari Hoffman.

But Pittman argued he believes the department is even further behind from mitigating the crisis than that.

“Right now, they’re bringing members into the department, and they’re not able to pass all of the training, so they’re having to let those members go because they can’t meet the minimum qualifications and standards,” Pittman said. “So they’re actually falling much behind their projected staffing.”

“They only have 39 members actively through recruit school. They started with 53 that a target of 80. Currently, there’s about 40 vacancies as of March into April, and that’s not looking any better,” he continued.

But even despite the challenges surrounding his termination, Pittman, who owns a construction company, said he would “absolutely” return to work at the department, citing his willingness to serve his community.

“I love that job,” Pittman said. “A lot of my family still works there. Most firefighters do it because their duty to serve… It’s not about the job. It’s about the love of the job.”

Fight world reacts after UFC 283: Jamahal Hill wins light heavyweight championship, Glover Teixeira retires

The fight world swiftly reacted after UFC fighter Jamahal Hill defeated Glover Teixeira in Rio de Janeiro at UFC 283 Saturday night, capturing the light heavyweight championship and cementing his place at the top of the division.

The challenger winning the wildly one-sided affair was not the only surprise that evening as the former champ also left his gloves in the Octagon, signaling his retirement from the sport.

“Glover has had a stellar career and has nothing else to prove,” UFC #5 ranked middleweight Derek Brunson tweeted. “Major inspiring career! Thanks legend!”

“Thank you @gloverteixeira,” former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping tweeted. “Legend personified.”

“Incredible career @gloverteixeira,” UFC lightweight Anthony “Showtime” Pettis added, calling Teixeria “a true legend.”

Hill’s striking was on full display throughout the five-round contest as the new belt holder emerged victorious via a unanimous decision over a battered Teixeira.

The teary-eyed new champ embraced his coaches after the bout in celebration of the biggest fight of his career.

SUSPENDED UFC COACH WAS A MIDDLEMAN FOR OFFSHORE GAMBLING SITE: REPORT

Hill received his own praise from former UFC champions Jon Jones and Justin Gaethje and others.

Teixeira and Hill won Fight of the Night.

Teixeira remained in the contest til the final bell but was unsuccessful in winning back a championship he won for the first time at UFC 267. After losing the belt at UFC 275, Texeiria was given another shot at the vacated title but was unable to overcome Hill.

After the fight, the Brazilian veteran said his toughness got him to the end but that he can no longer “keep up anymore.”

“In reality though, I think I’m too tough for my own good,” Teixeira explained in the middle of the Octagon. “I can’t keep up anymore. I’m gonna focus my energy on [middleweight champ] Alex Pereira. He’s gonna keep his belt for a while and go up to light heavyweight. It’s an honor to put the gloves down on the same night as Shogun.”

Maurício “Shogun” Rua, also a Brazilian veteran and former light heavyweight champion, retired earlier in the night following his loss to Ihor Potieria.

Teixeira is widely remarked as a legend of the sport and retires with a 16-7 record in UFC.

His record includes wins over former UFC light heavyweight champions Jan Blachowicz, Rashad Evans, Quinton Jackson, as well as Ryan Bader, who is a former champion in different divisions for Bellator.

Also at UFC 283, Moreno defended his flyweight belt via doctor’s stoppage between the third and fourth rounds, and welterweight Gilbert Burns picked up a crucial submission victory over Neil “The Haitian Sensation” Magny.

“It has been a devastating 48 hours,” he wrote at the time.”We lost my brother Don on Tuesday at 94 and today we have all lost Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at 96.”

The queen, England’s longest-reigning monarch, passed away on Sept. 8 at Scotland’s Balmoral Castle.

Stewart’s wife, Penny Lancaster, was a member of the police detail at the queen’s state funeral.

“With all that planning going ahead, you can never quite predict how the crowd is [going to] react and the dangers that might lay ahead,” the British model and TV personality told Sky News.

“But we’ve had great training and preparation and fortunately, everybody paid their respects in the proper manner, and we didn’t have any incidents to speak of,” the 51-year-old shared. “So I’m very grateful for that.”

“This is the biggest honor of all, to be able to serve today on Her Majesty the Queen’s funeral,” Lancaster told PA News Agency. “We were in uniform by five o’clock this morning, and we didn’t know what time we will be working until. We just want to make sure that all the crowds get home safely.”

The star noted that despite her “long” shift, “I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”

Lancaster and Stewart tied the knot in 2007.
