Crenshaw: Drama over McCarthy vote 'seemed very, very pointless'

Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, softened his tone Sunday toward the Republican holdouts who temporarily blocked Kevin McCarthy’s speakership bid, saying that while he doesn’t actually believe his Republican colleagues are “terrorists,” he thinks the way they went about stalling the House vote was “pointless.”

“There was no reason for us to keep voting, keep voting, keep allowing these speeches that just degraded and diminished and insulted Kevin McCarthy,” Crenshaw said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “We didn’t have to keep doing that. We could have just adjourned for the whole week and just kept negotiating.”

“That’s where the heartburn is and that’s what I want people to know,” he said. “This deal was easy. That wasn’t the hard part, right? There’s not as much disagreement as everyone thinks on how that rules package went by and what some of the new changes needed to be. The only thing I’ll disagree with this group on is, is that it could have been done earlier.”

“So that’s what justifies the animosity that occurred all week, and it seemed very, very pointless,” he added.

TED CRUZ CHASTISES DAN CRENSHAW FOR ‘OVERHEATED RHETORIC’ IN HOUSE SPEAKER FIGHT: ‘SETTLE DOWN’

Crenshaw came under fire from fellow Republicans on day two of the lengthy speaker vote last week after he blasted the 21 holdouts, accusing them of looking for a “scalp” and likening them to “terrorists.”

“That’s why we’re saying it, because we cannot let the terrorists win,” Crenshaw told Fox News Radio

His use of the word “terrorists” drew criticism from Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Fox News host Tucker Carlson and others, but Crenshaw defended the term as “a figure of speech.”

“Unclutch your pearls. It’s a figure of speech. You can’t insult, slander and hold everyone hostage with no way out – and not expect me to punch back,” he tweeted Wednesday. “Grow thicker skin.”

Crenshaw echoed the same sentiment on Sunday but offered an apology to any of the holdouts who may have taken him literally.

REPUBLICANS’ BATTLE OVER HOUSE SPEAKERSHIP HAS BEEN ‘COMING TO A HEAD FOR A LONG TIME’ REP. SCALISE

“Look, things get heated and things get said. Obviously, the people who took offense by that, it’s pretty obvious that it’s meant as a turn of phrase,” he said.

“I was a little taken aback by the sensitivity of it,” he continued. “To the extent that I have colleagues that were offended by it, I sincerely apologize to them. I don’t want them to think I actually believe they’re terrorists.”

McCarthy won the speakership position on Saturday in a record 15th round of voting, receiving 216 votes, a bare majority that was lower than the normal 218 votes needed because six of his remaining GOP detractors relented to vote “present.”

The GOP rules package McCarthy sent to members included the central concession that would allow any five Republican representatives to force a vote of no confidence in the speaker. Previous House rules, put in place by previous Speaker Nancy Pelosi, required a member of the House leadership from the majority party to initiate a vote to remove the current speaker.

Former Ohio lawmaker ignites Twitter debate over jobs, need for 'side hustles': 'Does that mean I'm poor?'

Former Ohio lawmaker and left-wing activist Nina Turner sparked a Twitter debate about the job market after tweeting that “side hustles” shouldn’t need to exist.

“Side hustles shouldn’t need to exist,” Turner wrote Monday. “One job should be enough.”

Several users replied with their explanations as to why one job is not always enough in the current U.S. economy.

TWITTER ERUPTS AFTER BEING ASKED TO DEFINE ‘WOKE’: ‘MARXIST OPPRESSION NARRATIVES’

“One job would be enough if the State didn’t take its undeserved cut from each and every paycheck,” the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania replied.

Others explained why they work multiple jobs, and suggested Turner’s argument was arrogant.

JOB OPENINGS REMAIN ELEVATED IN NOVEMBER DESPITE FED EFFORTS TO COOL LABOR MARKET

“People should be free to work and make as much as they want. It should not be up to government to shackle anyone to any specific job,” another user said.

Some, though, high-fived Turner’s argument.

“Countries need to speed up their economic transformation. Side hustles and advances that come with getting good jobs for young people are evidence of a failed economy @ninaturner you so right,” one user said.

NOVEMBER JOBS REPORT WAS NOT A BLOWOUT, IT WAS A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT

“Yes! I was talking to someone today about how messed up it is that needing more than one job to just meet living expenses is so normalized and how wrong that is. Imagine living in a country where no matter what job you have you have enough money to afford a 1br [1 bedroom] on your own,” comic artist Jason Piperberg wrote.

U.S. job growth rose faster than expected in November despite higher interest rates and soaring inflation. Employers added 263,000 jobs that month, according to the Labor Department.

But some analysts have argued it’s nothing to celebrate.

“The seemingly robust headline number of 263,000 jobs comes from the establishment survey of businesses, while the unemployment rate comes from the household survey,” The Heritage Foundation’s E.J. Antoni wrote. But the household survey also has a measure of employment, and that fell by 138,000. In fact, the household survey has been flat since March of this year, with essentially no jobs added over that time.”

It’s not the first time Turner, the former co-chair for Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, ignited a Twitter debate. When she challenged Twitter CEO Elon Musk last month to define the word “woke,” she got several entertaining responses from social media users who took the opportunity to slam the progressive movement as being based on “Marxist oppression narratives,” or “radical socialism philosophy.”

Idaho murders suspect pulled over twice on cross-country race home with dad, lawyer claims

Bryan Kohberger, the suspected killer of four University of Idaho students who police arrested in Pennsylvania Friday, made the 2,500-mile road trip home with his dad and was pulled over twice along the way, according to his public defender.

Jason LaBar, Kohberger’s Pennsylvania defense attorney in the extradition case, did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment Monday.

However, he illustrated parts of the suspect’s cross-country race home in a televised interview, stating that Kohberger’s dad flew into Spokane, Washington, and then drove down to Pullman in a pre-planned trip ahead of the drive home ahead of the holiday break.

“I don’t know whether they were speeding or not or if they were even issued a ticket,” LaBar reportedly told NBC. “I just know that they were pulled over in Indiana almost back-to-back. I believe once for speeding and once for falling too closely to a car in front of them.”

IDAHO MURDER SUSPECT KOHBERGER’S PENNSYLVANIA CLASSMATES SAY HE WAS ‘BRIGHT,’ AWKWARD, BULLIED IN SCHOOL

An Indiana State Police spokesman told Fox News Digital he could not find evidence of any such encounters.

“We have examined records and do not find any record of any traffic stops or any interactions involving Bryan Kohberger, his father, or any Kohberger,” Sgt. Glen Fifield said Monday.

LaBar did not immediately clarify which jurisdictions the stops happened in.

Kohberger, 28, was a PhD candidate at Washington State University in Pullman, roughly 10 miles from the University of Idaho in Moscow. The two communities lie just across state lines from one another.

Classes ended at WSU on Dec. 15 and the following day at UI. It was not immediately clear when Kohberger left Pullman, but he returned to Albrightsville, Pennsylvania by Dec. 17, according to LaBar.

CRIMINOLOGIST GRAD STUDENT HIT WITH FOUR COUNTS OF FIRST-DEGREE MURDER

Police allege that sometime between 3 and 4 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2022, Kohberger entered a six-bedroom house and attacked four students in their sleep with a knife.

The ambush killed Maddie Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, 21-year-old best friends, as well as their housemate Xana Kernodle and her boyfriend Ethan Chapin, both 20.

Two other young women on the home’s bottom level were left alone, according to police.
Kohberger has a master’s degree from DeSales in criminal justice and was studying at WSU’s department of criminal justice and criminology.

UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO MURDERS TIMELINE: WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE SLAUGHTER OF FOUR STUDENTS

Pennsylvania police arrested him on Friday after Idaho authorities charged him with four counts of first-degree murder and another charge of felony burglary for allegedly entering a residence with intent to commit murder.

In Washington, investigators searched his apartment for hours on the same day, removing boxes and bags of evidence as well as a desktop computer.

Kohberger is expected to waive extradition Tuesday and return to Idaho to face the charges.

Through his attorney, he said he expects to be exonerated.

However John Kelly, a criminal profiler and psychotherapist who has interviewed multiple serial killers, told Fox News Digital Monday that if Kohberger did commit the crimes, he made a series of key errors, especially for someone with an education focused on criminology.

“Flight can be a sign of guilt,” Kelly said.

But other mistakes include the indoor crime scene – virtually impossible to clean up, attacking so many people at once with a knife and allegedly believing he could avoid leaving behind evidence.

Phillies one win away from World Series as offense pours it on in Game 4 win over Padres

It certainly didn’t start off well for the Philadelphia Phillies, but double-digit runs will cure just about anything.

The Phillies are now one win away from winning the National League pennant after their 10-6 win over the in Game 4 of the NLCS.

The Phillies made it a bullpen game, and Bailey Falter retired the first two guys he faced. But Manny Machado launched a solo home run to left-center to put the Padres up early. But the Padres kept it coming – the next two Padres got on base, and Brandon Drury drove them both in with a double. Rob Thomson yanked Falter, but Ha-Seong Kim had an RBI single off Connor Brogdon to put San Diego up 4-0.

But the Phillies answered back immediately. After Kyle Schwarber led off the bottom half of the inning with a single, Rhys Hoskins belted a two-run homer to cut the deficit in half. J.T. Realmuto then walked, and he scored all the way from first on Bryce Harper’s double. Neither pitcher record three outs – in fact, Padres’ Mike Clevinger didn’t record one.

ASTROS PUT YANKEES ON BRINK OF GETTING SWEPT IN ALCS AFTER GETTING SHUT OUT IN GAME 3

The second and third innings were silent, but the Phillies put the tying run on base in the fourth with a leadoff double from Nick Castellanos, and Bryson Stott drove him in with a single.

In the fifth, Juan Soto put San Diego back in front of a two-run homer, but Hoskins answered right back with his second two-run homer of the night, tying the game up at six. In fact, the bottom of the fifth was almost a carbon copy of the bottom of the first. Realmuto again scored from first on a Harper double, this one giving the Phillies their first lead of the night. Castellanos then drove Harper in with a single up the middle. In the sixth, Schwarber hit a solo home run, making it a 9-6 Phillies lead, and Realmuto joined the fun with a solo homer of his own in the seventh.

Phillies relievers – in this case, non-starters – combined for 8.1 innings of two-run ball, with those runs only coming on Soto’s homer. They allowed just five hits and struck out eight while walking one.

Zack Wheeler tossed a gem in Game 1, and he’ll look to do the same in Game 5 on Sunday afternoon to send the Phillies to their first Fall Classic since 2009. Yu Darvish will look to send the series back to San Diego.

First pitch is at 2:37 p.m.

Gisele Bündchen admits 'concerns' over Tom Brady’s return to NFL, says she wishes he could be ‘more present'

Gisele Bündchen said she wishes her husband Tom Brady could be “more present” in their family’s life while adding that she has concerns about the NFL legend’s return to the sport after prematurely announcing his retirement earlier this year.

“Obviously, I have my concerns – this is a very violent sport, and I have my children and I would like him to be more present,” she told Elle magazine in the October issue.

She agreed with the interviewer that media reports that she’s desperate to have the quarterback retire are sexist – “I think this is the system we’ve been living in. That’s what society has accepted and what society hasn’t accepted – but admitted she’s had “conversations with him over and over again” about his continuing to play at 45 years old.

“But ultimately, I feel that everybody has to make a decision that works for [them]. He needs to follow his joy, too,” she said of her husband who has seven Super Bowl rings.

TOM BRADY GUSHES ABOUT HIS ‘AMAZING WIFE’ GISELE BUNDCHEN

While she declined to comment on why Brady took 11 days off from an August training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers “to deal with some personal things,” as the Buccaneers head coach said, the quarterback told reporters, “Everyone has different situations they’re dealing with, and we all have unique challenges to our lives. I’m 45 years old, man. There’s a lot of s— going on, so you just have to try and figure out life the best you can. You know, it’s a continuous process.”

Some media outlets had speculated the break meant the two were having marital problems.

In the latest episode of his podcast “Let’s Go! with Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray,” he said, “football and family has always been the most important thing to me.”

The supermodel told Elle it makes her happy to see Brady’s and her children’s success and says she also has plans for herself – she’s especially involved in conservation efforts in her native country of Brazil.

“I’ve done my part, which is [to] be there for [Tom],” she told the magazine. “I moved to Boston, and I focused on creating a cocoon and a loving environment for my children to grow up in and to be there supporting him and his dreams. Seeing my children succeed and become the beautiful little humans that they are, seeing him succeed, and being fulfilled in his career – it makes me happy. At this point in my life, I feel like I’ve done a good job on that. I have a huge list of things that I have to do, that I want to do,” she says. At 42, I feel more connected with my purpose.”

The couple have been married since 2009 and have two children together: Benjamin Rein, 12, and daughter Vivian Lake, 9. Brady also has son Jack Edward, 15, with ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan.

Bündchen didn’t attend the Buccaneers season opener against the Dallas Cowboys in Texas on Sunday, but she tweeted her support, writing, “Let’s go @TomBrady ! Let’s go Bucs !” The Buccaneers won 19-3.
