Arizona families file lawsuit challenging state law ban on transgender participation in school sports

Two families in Arizona have filed a lawsuit challenging a state law that bans transgender girls from participating in school sports, with one parent citing concern for their child’s “self-esteem” and “confidence.”

The lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Tucson challenges Senate Bill 1165, which restricts participation in school sports based on a biological sex.

The identities of the two plaintiffs in the case, an 11-year-old and 15-year-old, have been concealed out of fear for their safety. Their names are listed as Jane Doe and Megan Roe, respectively.

“Jane will be very upset if she is not allowed to play sports on a girls’ team. Jane knows this would be because she is transgender, and I worry about how that will affect her self-esteem and her confidence,” the mother Jane Doe said via a statement provided by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), which is representing the plaintiffs in the case.

“Jane will not receive all the positive benefits that school sports provide. This includes the obvious physical benefits, but also social and emotional benefits of playing with other kids, learning how to win and lose, and having coaches and other adults who support the team.”

“No parent ever wants their kid to lose out on opportunities and experiences that can help them grow as people,” the mother of Megan Roe added. “Sports provide all kinds of benefits to kids, and it is very upsetting that they may be completely cut off for my child.”

Attorneys in the case have also argued the law violates the Equal Protection Clause under the U.S. Constitution and Title IX.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne was named a defendant in the case. He called the lawsuit’s logic “backwards.”

“Title IX was aimed at giving girls equal opportunities for playing sports. When a biological boy plays in a girls’ sport, it disadvantages the girls,” Horne told The Associated Press. “There have been lots of news stories about girls who worked hard to excel at their sports, found they could not when they had to compete against biological boys and were devastated by that.”

The lawsuit also names the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the Kyrene School District in Tempe and The Gregory School in Tucson as defendants in the case.

The lawsuit follows the Biden administration’s plan to release new Title IX rules that would bar states from banning transgender students from competing against the gender they identify as.

DeSantis fires back at Disney as company tries to 'usurp' state oversight

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the state legislature is working on a bill to reassert its control over Disney World’s Reedy Creek Improvement District.

DeSantis said the legislature will void a development agreement Disney made to invalidate the state’s oversight of the area. DeSantis had signed a bill earlier this year, HB 9-B, that stripped Reedy Creek Improvement District of its self-governance privileges, giving oversight back to the state.

“Disney’s corporate kingdom is over — despite their repeated and futile attempts to circumvent the Legislature and the will of the people,” said Governor Ron DeSantis Monday.

DeSantis had appointed the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board to replace the Reedy Creek Improvement District, but the oversight board discovered the district had made development plans with Disney right before HB 9-B was enacted, giving control of the district’s development rights to Disney, Click Orlando reported.

WAR OVER THE CORPORATE KINGDOM: DESANTIS’ NEW BOARD SPARS FOR CONTROL WITH DISNEY

DeSantis said the deal was “designed to usurp the authority of the CFTOD board.”

“They [Disney] are not superior to the laws that are enacted by the state of Florida,” the governor said during a news conference Monday. “They thought they could create a development agreement that would render everything we did null and void. That’s not going to work, that’s not going to fly.”

The press conference was delivered at the Reedy Creek Administration Building. The governor added that lawmakers will end Disney’s self-inspection of rides, while allowing the state to examine an amusement ride if someone is seriously injured.

“Their cheerleaders in the media thought that Disney ‘outsmarted’ the state, but the new control board uncovered their sloppy scheme, and the agreements will be nullified by new legislation that I intend to execute. Disney will operate on a level playing field with every other business in Florida. I look forward to the additional actions that the state control board will implement in the upcoming days,” DeSantis continued.

“People are like, ‘Well, there’s what should we do with this land?” said DeSantis at the press conference Monday. “Maybe create a state park, maybe try to do more amusement parks? Someone even said, ‘Maybe you need another state prison?’ Who knows? I just think that the possibilities are endless.”

DeSantis said lawmakers could roll out the bill by as early as next week, according to the Orlando Sun Sentinel.

Katie Porter blames sexism when pressed on 'The View' about staff mistreatment allegations

Rep. Katie Porter, D-Calif., blamed sexism when pressed by “The View” hosts on staff mistreatment allegations against her during an interview on Monday.

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked about the “toxic workplace” allegations.

An ex-staffer for the California Democrat alleged that the congresswoman made rude and racist comments to staff and said that she “ridiculed people for reporting sexual harassment.”

Sasha Georgiades, a Navy veteran and former Wounded Warrior fellow for Porter, also alleged that she heard the progressive congresswoman use racial slurs when talking to staff. Porter also faced scrutiny after leaked text messages showed her berating Georgiades for catching the coronavirus.

KATIE PORTER ALLEGATIONS OF RACIST RHETORIC AND DOMESTIC ABUSE IGNORED BY MOST MEDIA AS SHE LAUNCHES SENATE BID

“I’m incredibly proud of my staff, the book is actually dedicated to my staff and my volunteers. And I say this in the book and in the dedication and it’s true, I may stand in front of them, but they are the ones that are leading the way for every viral moment you see, for every whiteboard that I get the word spelled correctly and I know what I’m talking about, there’s a ton of amazing people behind me and helping me and I’m so grateful for them,” Porter responded.

She added that “lots of the so-called bad bosses” are women and “disproportionately people of color.”

“I’m proud of my staff, I’m proud of the relationship we built, I’m proud to have them as my team moving forward,” she said.

Porter was also pressed on her ex-husband’s allegations of domestic abuse.

“In 2013 you requested and were granted an emergency protective order against your then-husband, who you say physically abused you. Your ex-husband has made his own allegations saying you abused him, but nevertheless, that you abused him physically and verbally during your marriage freight is any of that true? And what do you think this is really about?” co-host Sunny Hostin asked.

Porter, who is running for Dianne Feinstein’s California Senate seat, said that when people are survivors of domestic violence, “people try to silence them.”

KATIE PORTER BERATED IRVINE MAYOR IN TEXTS: ‘LECTURE ME’ ON ‘PROFESSIONALISM’ AND ‘SEE WHAT HAPPENS’

According to divorce documents received by Fox News Digital, Porter and her ex-husband, Matt Hoffman, both filed domestic violence restraining orders against each other after an April 2013 altercation at the home they shared while legally separated.

“So what I would say is that my kids and I and I think my ex-husband would all like to move on from this. All of these discussions are very, very hard on my children. I talk about in the book, that having to rebut this politically is maybe the only political decision I’ve ever had to make. The only, not to vote, not a campaign contribution, I have lived my values,” she responded.

After Hostin said she was “surprised” it comes up politically, Porter criticized conservative media outlets for asking questions about the allegations.

“It only comes up in these contexts where people are trying to tear down a strong, outspoken woman,” she added.

Fox News’s Huston Keene contributed to this report.
