Dengue outbreak in Peru reaches 200K cases, 200 dead, heightened by El NiƱo rains

Peru’s worst dengue outbreak on record could intensify further as an El NiƱo climate phenomenon brings torrential rains and mosquitoes, driving the death toll this year past 200 with over 130,000 recorded cases, the health ministry said on Thursday.

Dengue fever is an aedes aegypti mosquito-borne tropical disease that can provoke a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pain, and sometimes death.

The country’s health authorities have pointed towards the natural climate phenomenal, El NiƱo, as one of the key drivers of the surge in cases.Ā

El NiƱo is a cyclical warming of the world’s oceans and weather, which fuels tropical cyclones in the Pacific, boosting rainfall and flood risk in the region. The increase in rainfall brings mass reproduction of mosquitoes due to the accumulation of water in the cities.

Peru’s health officials are prohibiting residents from storing still water in open containers, hoping to prevent reproduction.Ā

ā€œDengue kills,ā€ said Health Minister Rosa GutiĆ©rrez in a Tuesday statement. ā€œBecause of that, help me eliminate mosquito breeding sites.ā€

On Thursday, June 8, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) declared that an El NiƱo is now underway. The past three years have been dominated by the cooler La NiƱa pattern.

Scientists say this year looks particularly worrying. The last strong El Niño was in 2016, and the world saw its hottest year on record.

ā€œWe’re in unprecedented territory,ā€ said Michelle L’Heureux, a meteorologist with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte signed a decree on Thursday declaring a two-month ā€œstate of emergencyā€ in 18 of the country’s 24 regions to allow swift official action for ā€œimminent danger from heavy rainfallā€ this year and next.

Boston police identify suspect accused of shooting responding police officer: ā€˜No respect for life’

Boston police have identified the suspect who allegedly shot a Boston Police officer multiple times Friday night.

John Lazare, 23, of Brockton, Massachusetts is facing a slew of charges including assault and battery with a firearm, armed robbery, and assault with a dangerous weapon, Boston Police officials said in a press conference on Saturday, June 10.Ā

ā€œThis is another example of people who have no respect for life in any way shape or form,ā€ Police Commissioner Michael Cox said at the press conference.

According to the police report, on Friday, June 9 at approximately 9:15 p.m., the unidentified officer saw Lazare who was in the process of robbing a delivery driver.Ā

The officer said that Lazare matched the description of someone wanted for robbing a Domino’s Pizza delivery driver on the same street on Wednesday.Ā

When the officer went to confront him, Lazare allegedly opened fire, hitting the officer multiple times.Ā

Police say that Lazare attempted to evade arrest by running inside a store and climbing onto the roof of a building. He allegedly jumped from the roof, landing in an alleyway and injuring his leg.

The Boston police department officer called for assistance over a police channel, and colleagues came and arrested Lazare and took the injured officer to Boston Medical Center. The officer was treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said Saturday that the officer is expected to survive. His name has not been released.

Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Colonel Jack Mawn released a statement following the officer shooting, commending the officer and sharing his commitment to keep people in Massachusetts safe.

ā€œWhen they hurt, we hurt,ā€ Mawn said in a statement. ā€œPolicing is a dangerous job. The men and women in this profession wear a bulletproof vest and carry a pistol, just to go to work.ā€

ā€œIt is a noble profession – a calling, more than an occupation,ā€ he continued. ā€œThose who answer the call, who join the ranks, know the risks. There are times, like last night, when we are confronted with this reality.ā€

Mawn said that since May 31, 2023, 166 officers have been shot in the line of duty in the U.S., and 20 of them died.Ā

ā€œTo members of the law enforcement profession, we thank you from the depth of our hearts,ā€ Mawn said. ā€œPlease continue to take care of yourselves, each other, and those who wait for your safe return home at the end of every shift.ā€

LIV Golf's Bryson DeChambeau suggests 9/11 families should forgive Saudi Arabia: 'Nobody's perfect'

LIV Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau spoke about the historic merger between the PGA Tour, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), and the DP World Tour that was announced on Tuesday, when he made an interesting suggestion regarding the controversial PIF.Ā

Since its inception, LIV Golf has been controversial, and not just because its goal of rivaling the biggest professional golf tour on the planet. Being backed by the PIF has created a large debate over their funding of terrorism before and after the 9/11 attacks in the United States.Ā

During an interview this week following the merger, DeChambeau was asked about what he would say to those families who were devastated by the 9/11 attacks by losing loved ones.Ā

ā€œI think we’ll never be able to repay the families back for what exactly happened just over 20 years ago and what happened is definitely horrible,ā€ he told CNN. ā€œI think as time has gone on, 20 years has passed, we’re in a place now where it’s time to start trying to work together to make things better together as a whole.Ā

ā€œI don’t know exactly what they’re feeling. I can’t ever know what they feel, but I have a huge amount of respect for their position and what they believe. Nor do I ever what anything like that to ever occur again.

RORY MCILROY REVEALS MINDSET AFTER SHOCKING PRO GOLF MERGER: ā€˜PGA TOUR HAS CONTROLS OVER EVERYTHING’

ā€œI think as we move forward from that, we have to look toward the pathway to peace and forgiveness, especially if we’re trying to mend the world and make it a better place. I think this is what they’re trying to accomplish, LIV is trying to accomplish, PIF is trying to accomplish. We’re all trying to accomplish is a better world for everybody with entertainment for everybody around the world.ā€

9/11 Families United Chairperson Terry Strada called out PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan earlier this week for using their stories ā€œto malign LIV Golfā€ over its ties to the PIF when the rival circuit presented itself as a threat to the Tour.

Strada spoke on ā€œAmerica’s Newsroomā€ where she said she was shocked to learn about the merger.

ā€œI am so disappointed and this was a real gut punch to wake up yesterday and read these headlines,ā€ Strada told host Bill Hemmer.Ā

ā€œIt’s unfortunate what has happened and something I can’t necessarily speak on. I’m a golfer,ā€ DeChambeau added. ā€œBut what I can say is that what they’re trying to do, what they’re trying to work on is to be better allies because we are allies with them. I’m not going to get into politics, I’m not specialized in that. What I can say is they’re trying to do good for the world and showcase themselves in a light that hasn’t been seen in a while.Ā

GREG NORMAN ā€˜NOT EXPECTED’ TO BE PART OF VENTURE AFTER LIVE GOLF-PGA TOUR MERGER: REPORT

ā€œNobody’s perfect, but we’re all trying to improve in life.ā€

DeChambeau reportedly got a $150 million signing bonus to jump ship from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf. He was among the group that cashed in, while others like Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods remained loyal to the Tour despite reportedly receiving nine-figure offers as well.Ā

The merger irked players who turned down money for loyalty.Ā

The PIF will be the main financial supporter of this new entity, per the merger’s release on Tuesday, while all litigation between the respective tours will be put to an end.

ā€œThis is the best thing that could ever happen for the game of golf, and I’m extremely proud to be a part of that,ā€ DeChambeau said.

ā€œI truly believe in the end, the game of golf wins in this scenario.ā€

Joran van der Sloot case: Prime Natalee Holloway suspect to be arraigned on extortion charges

Joran van der Sloot will be arraigned on Friday morning at 11 a.m. in a Birmingham, Alabama, federal courthouse on extortion charges related to the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

Van der Sloot arrived in Birmingham on Thursday afternoon after being flown on a Department of Justice jet with agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which left from Lima, Peru.

Van der Sloot is the prime suspect in the May 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba during a Mountain Brook High School, Alabama, senior trip.

The Dutch national will now face charges of extortion and wire fraud in the U.S. after allegedly attempting to sell Beth Holloway, Natalee’s mother, information regarding the location of her daughter’s body.

NATALEE HOLLOWAY SUSPECT JORAN VAN DER SLOOT ARRIVES IN US TO FACE EXTORTION, WIRE FRAUD CHARGES

Federal prosecutors say van der Sloot asked for $250,000 — $25,000 upfront for the information, and the rest to be paid out when the body of Natalee Holloway was positively identified.

However, van der Sloot lied to Beth Holloway’s lawyer, John Q. Kelly, about where her daughter’s remains were located, according to American prosecutors.

The alleged extortion scheme took place between March 29, 2010, and May 17, 2010.Ā

Van der Sloot then traveled to Peru and met Stephany Flores, 21, at a Lima casino owned by her father. Van der Sloot admitted to killing Flores, claiming he murdered her May 30, 2010, in a fit of anger after the 21-year-old found out he was connected to Natalee Holloway’s disappearance.

JORAN VAN DER SLOOT WILL LIKELY BE TRANSFERRED TO US DESPITE LAST-MINUTE EFFORTS: INTERPOL OFFICIAL

The charges were filed by federal prosecutors in 2010, but Peruvian officials didn’t agree to release van der Sloot into American custody until this May.

He was originally sentenced to 28 years in prison for the killing of Flores, but more time was added because of a drug smuggling scandal he was involved in while in jail.

Once van der Sloot’s federal case concludes, he will head back to Peru to finish his sentence for murdering Flores. After finishing his sentence in Peru, van der Sloot will then come to an American prison, if convicted.
