Chicago police arrest suspect in murder of off-duty officer heading home from work

A man wanted in connection with the murder of an off-duty Chicago police officer last month has been taken into custody, according to Chicago police.

The department said its officers and the U.S. Marashals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 22-year-old Xavier Tate Jr. for first-degree murder in Glendale Heights, Illinois, on Wednesday night.

Tate’s arrest comes five days after he was identified as the suspect in the killing of 30-year-old Chicago police officer Luis Huesca.

“We ask that the people of this city continue to support the Huesca family by keeping them in your prayers as they continue to mourn the loss of a beloved son, brother and uncle,” CPD said in a statement.

Huesca was shot and killed in the early morning hours of April 21 in the Gage Park area as he was on his way home from work. He was still in his uniform, but was wearing other clothing on top, Chicago police superintendent Larry Snelling said.

He was shot nearly 20 times with a firearm modified into an automatic weapon, FOX 32 Chicago previously reported.

Huesca’s vehicle was stolen during the incident and found nearby a short while later. His service weapon and badge were not found at the scene, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times.

When Chicago police identified Tate as a suspect on April 26, video footage was released of him inside convenience stores and outside on a sidewalk.

Tate was previously arrested for criminal trespass to a residence on March 6 in Olympia Fields, FOX 32 reported, citing court documents. He was supposed to appear in court for that case last Wednesday.

Crime Stoppers, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, the FBI and the Fraternal Order of Police were offering a combined $100,000 reward for information leading to Tate’s arrest.

Huesca, who was killed two days before his 31st birthday, served with the Chicago Police Department for six years. He was laid to rest on Monday.

Ohio man found with hammer at US Capitol, tased and arrested, police say

An Ohio man was tased and arrested Friday after allegedly trying to get into the U.S. Capitol building in Washington with a hammer, police said. 

The suspect, identified as Christopher Snow, 33, was being screened by U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) at around 3:40 p.m. at the Capitol Visitor Center, where his backpack went through an X-ray machine, authorities said. 

A USCP officer noticed a hammer inside the bag, police said.

“When the officer attempted secondary screening to look inside the bag, the suspect attempted to grab the bag and became combative, a police statement said. 

Several officers intervened to stop Snow and a struggle ensued, police said. 

Officers then tased Snow and took him into custody. 

The hammer was found in the bag, police said. 

“These officers did what they were trained to do and stopped this man from getting into the U.S. Capitol,” said USCP Capt. Andrew Pecher. “Great work from the officer who spotted the hammer, to the officers who quickly took the suspect into custody.”

Investigators were still trying to determine why Snow, a Canton resident, brought a hammer to the Capitol. He is charged with assault on a police officer.

Delaware police investigating possible abuse of special needs students at elementary school

Special needs children at a Delaware elementary school may have been abused inside the classroom by three teachers, according to police.

Families in Smyrna, Delaware, met with school administrators after learning their special needs children may have been the victims of abuse inside the classroom.

Smyrna Police are investigating the possibility that three teachers at Smyrna Elementary engaged in professional misconduct. Police are working with the state Attorney General’s Office Special Victims Unit, which is common for these kinds of investigations, according to Fox 29.

“Your child’s school is the last place you’d think something like this would ever happen,” parent Leslie Thomas told Fox 29. “It has to be a different school. My son is traumatized, even turning on the street leading to Smyrna Elementary, so I could never force him to go somewhere where he was traumatized.”

The Smyrna School District released a statement Wednesday saying a report was made on February 16 of possible professional misconduct.

“As part of our multi-faceted approach to keep our students safe, we have taken all precautions, including contacting law enforcement and providing alternative staff to instruct students,” the statement said. “The investigation is active and on-going.”

“While I cannot go into detail, due to the ongoing investigation, I can assure you that the professional misconduct being investigated is not sexual in nature,” the district said in a follow-up statement. “District staff were at the school to support students, employees, and affected parents.”

Some of the families spoke with police and were told the details of the allegations, including the children being locked in bathrooms and having objects thrown at them.

“They were being locked in the bathroom in the dark by themselves,” parent Tierre Thomas told Fox 29. “Their hair was being pulled. Objects were being thrown at them. They were being put in timeout physically and being held there.”

Leslie Thomas said she previously raised concerns to the district after observing changes in her son this school year. She and other parents are petitioning the district to move the students to another elementary school.

“We’re seeing aggression in him, hitting, something he has never done before. He flinches. He’s afraid of the dark. These are all behaviors he has never exhibited before but consistent with the allegations that have been made,” she said. “Most of the parents have agreed on North Smyrna, so for right now I would like to see them create that setting and of course we all would like to see the charges coming very soon.”

The police investigation could last several months.

Bills fan killed in shooting outside Dolphins stadium after game, police say

A Buffalo Bills fan was shot and killed shortly after watching his team win the AFC East on Sunday night, police said.

Dylan Issacs, 30, was identified as the victim who died outside Hard Rock Stadium, where the Bills had just beaten the Miami Dolphins, 21-14.

Issacs, who was from Canada, attended the game that decided the division champion – Buffalo had clinched a playoff spot earlier in the day with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ loss, while Miami clinched weeks earlier.

Police said Issacs was shot after he and a group of friends “had a verbal argument with the subject” while walking “through the traffic,” according to WIVB in Buffalo.

“The subject exited the vehicle and fired several rounds” before fleeing the scene “in an unknown direction,” police said.

Police have since recovered the vehicle from which the shots were fired, and a suspect has been located, Miami’s Local 10 reported. The car was found in West Palm Beach, but no arrests had been made as of Wednesday afternoon.

A GoFundMe has been launched to help his family with funeral fees and have him laid to rest in Six Nations, Canada.

The GoFundMe also states that an “unknown male… tried to intentionally hit” the group with the vehicle.

“He always made people laugh,” Isaacs’ mother, Susan, told CBS News. “We are all hurting and he played an important part in everyone’s lives. Now we need help with burial expenses. I just need to pay for his funeral and his casket.”

“Conflicts are not worth a life,” she added. “I’m was just a game and people were mean. We are all here and we will never forget you. You will live forever in our hearts. He will not be forgotten.”

Teenage foreign exchange student from China 'forcefully' abducted in Utah: police

Police are looking for a 17-year-old foreign exchange student who they believe was “forcefully taken” from the home he was sharing with his host family in Utah.

In a press conference on Friday, Riverdale Police Chief Casey Warren said that authorities believe that Kai Zhuang, an exchange student from China, was “forcefully taken” and is “being held against his will.”

Authorities said that Zhuang was last seen at about 3:30 a.m. on Thursday and police were notified of his disappearance by 8:30 p.m. that night. 

The student was described as 5-feet-9, 150 pounds with black hair and black eyes.

Police sent an endangered missing person advisory on Friday after the department received a call from Zhuang’s local high school saying that they had heard from his concerned parents in China.

Zhuang’s frantic parents claimed that they received a photo of their son along with a ransom letter, Chief Warren said.

Riverdale police say they are working with the FBI, the US Embassy in China and Chinese officials to locate the missing juvenile.

No suspect has been identified at this time.

Anyone with information about Zhuang’s disappearance is asked to call the Riverdale Police Department at (801)394-6616.

The U.S. Embassy in China did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

US tourist paddleboarding in Bahamas killed by shark: police

A tourist was killed by a shark Monday while paddleboarding in the Bahamas, according to local police. 

Nassau police were notified around 11:15 a.m. about a woman visiting from Boston, Massachusetts, who’d been attacked by a shark. She is believed to be in her 40s. 

Police told reporters that the woman had been paddleboarding with a male relative less than a mile off the western end of New Providence island, where the capital, Nassau, is located, when she was bitten by a shark. 

A lifeguard on duty observed what was happening, went out on a rescue boat, and retrieved the victim along with her relative, and brought them to safety. 

CPR was administered to the female victim, but she had suffered serious injuries to the right side of her body, including the upper hip region and her right upper limb, police said. 

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and assessed that she “showed no vital signs of life,” police said. The relative who she was paddleboarding with was not injured.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences…for this most unfortunate situation,” Police Sgt. Desiree Ferguson said. 

It was not immediately clear what type of shark attacked the woman. Police have not released the identity of the victim. 

Fatal shark attacks are rare, with only an average of five to six reported worldwide a year, most of them occurring in Australia. Last year, there were a total of 57 unprovoked bites around the globe, the majority of them in the U.S., according to the International Shark Attack File.

At least 33 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks have been reported in the Bahamas since 1580, with the island ranking ninth worldwide, according to the file.

The Nassau Guardian newspaper reported that authorities in the Bahamas are still searching for a German woman who went missing late last month after she was attacked while diving.

Last year, a shark killed a U.S. cruise ship passenger from Pennsylvania who was snorkeling in the northern Bahamas near Green Cay.

Most shark attacks in the Caribbean occur in the Bahamas, although a rare shark attack was reported in the French Caribbean territory of St. Martin three years ago.

Houston police hunt costumed gunman, accomplice after strangers' argument turns deadly

A costumed gunman fatally shot a man during an argument in downtown Houston, and the two “persons of interest” remain on the loose.

The shooter – wearing a “yellow and black costume” with a yellow-and-black-striped tail with a hoodie – shot a man twice in the chest around 1:20 a.m. Thursday, police said. 

The other suspect is described as a man with long, black hair wearing a pink or orange T-shirt.

The victim was a 20-year-old man whose name has not been released. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim and his family crossed an intersection where one person in a costume and another with a camera and tripod were set up. 

The two groups “exchanged words,” Houston police said during a press conference.

It appears as though the tripod was pushed or kicked, Commander Chris Hassig said, although there is no audio on the surveillance video to tell what was said or why it escalated.

After the shooting, the suspects went to “several” bars or restaurants in the area, and investigators continue to work leads, Hassig said.

In the surveillance footage that police released, they were spotted getting into a white Mazda hatchback with three stickers on the back left window and another sticker on the rear window. 

“We would like to speak to them to get their version of events,” Hassig said. 

Chief Troy Finner said this was “an isolated incident” at the intersection of Austin and Lamar streets in a bustling area of the city’s downtown, which he stressed is “a safe area.”

He urged the suspects to turn themselves in and for potential witnesses to come forward with tips.

Police are looking for the actual costume, as well, according to Hassig. 

The suspects were spotted in T-shirts as they got in the Mazda and drove off. It is unclear what happened to that costume. 

The investigation remains ongoing.
