Chicago police arrest suspect in murder of off-duty officer heading home from work

A man wanted in connection with the murder of an off-duty Chicago police officer last month has been taken into custody, according to Chicago police.

The department said its officers and the U.S. Marashals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 22-year-old Xavier Tate Jr. for first-degree murder in Glendale Heights, Illinois, on Wednesday night.

Tate’s arrest comes five days after he was identified as the suspect in the killing of 30-year-old Chicago police officer Luis Huesca.

“We ask that the people of this city continue to support the Huesca family by keeping them in your prayers as they continue to mourn the loss of a beloved son, brother and uncle,” CPD said in a statement.

Huesca was shot and killed in the early morning hours of April 21 in the Gage Park area as he was on his way home from work. He was still in his uniform, but was wearing other clothing on top, Chicago police superintendent Larry Snelling said.

He was shot nearly 20 times with a firearm modified into an automatic weapon, FOX 32 Chicago previously reported.

Huesca’s vehicle was stolen during the incident and found nearby a short while later. His service weapon and badge were not found at the scene, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times.

OFF-DUTY CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER SHOT, KILLED DRIVING HOME FROM WORK: ‘ANOTHER SAD DAY’

When Chicago police identified Tate as a suspect on April 26, video footage was released of him inside convenience stores and outside on a sidewalk.

Tate was previously arrested for criminal trespass to a residence on March 6 in Olympia Fields, FOX 32 reported, citing court documents. He was supposed to appear in court for that case last Wednesday.

Crime Stoppers, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, the FBI and the Fraternal Order of Police were offering a combined $100,000 reward for information leading to Tate’s arrest.

Huesca, who was killed two days before his 31st birthday, served with the Chicago Police Department for six years. He was laid to rest on Monday.

'Sopranos' actor thanks SCOTUS for 'allowing' him to 'discriminate,' makes announcement about his work

Actor Michael Imperioli thanked the Supreme Court on Saturday for “allowing” him to discriminate after they held that a graphic designer who creates wedding websites does not have to create them for same-sex marriages.

He also decided to “forbid bigots and homophobes” from watching his work.

“I’ve decided to forbid bigots and homophobes from watching The Sopranos, The White Lotus, Goodfellas or any movie or tv show I’ve been in. Thank you Supreme Court for allowing me to discriminate and exclude those who I don’t agree with and am opposed to. USA ! USA!” he wrote.

“Hate and ignorance is not a legitimate point of view,” he wrote on Instagram. “America is becoming dumber by the minute.”

SUPREME COURT RULES AGAINST BIDEN STUDENT LOAN DEBT HANDOUT

In a 6-3 decision issued Friday, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of artist Lorie Smith, who sued the state over its anti-discrimination law that prohibited businesses providing sales or other accommodations to the public from denying service based on a customer’s sexual orientation.

Justice Neil Gorsuch authored the majority opinion, which said that, “In this case, Colorado seeks to force an individual to speak in ways that align with its views but defy her conscience about a matter of major significance.”

“But, as this Court has long held, the opportunity to think for ourselves and to express those thoughts freely is among our most cherished liberties and part of what keeps our Republic strong,” he continued.

The Supreme Court handed down several rulings at the end of June, including ruling against President Biden’s student loan handout plan.

ARTIST AT CENTER OF SUPREME COURT FIGHT ‘ROCKED’ BY COLORADO LAW THAT MAKES HER CATER TO SAME-SEX WEDDINGS

In the 6-3 decision, the court held that federal law does not allow the secretary of education to cancel more than $430 billion in student loan debt.

The high court also ruled against affirmative action on Thursday.

“Or a benefit to a student whose heritage or culture motivated him or her to assume a leadership role or attain a particular goal must be tied to that student’s unique ability to contribute to the university. In other words, the student must be treated based on his or her experiences as an individual—not on the basis of race,” Justice Thomas wrote in the majority opinion.

Imperioli is known for his roles in the “Sopranos,” “The White Lotus” and “Goodfellas.”

Bloop (YC S21) Is Hiring a Front End Engineer to Work on OSS AI Code Search

Hi HN,

You can join our team of ML, backend (Rust) and frontend (TS, React) engineers and work at the intersection of AI and developer tools.

Using our product, you can ask questions about large codebases in natural language, just like you’d talk to ChatGPT. You can also find code, paths and identifiers using regex and navigate defs/refs using precise code navigation. The project is open source (https://github.com/BloopAI/bloop) and is built from the ground up in Rust and Typescript.

Some highlights from the stack you’ll be working with:

– We ship a Tauri based desktop client, a new Rust based alternative to Electron. By indexing local repos, we bring code search to everyone’s desktop.

– We’re using a new vector search engine qdrant, written in you guessed it – Rust. This powers our low latency semantic retrieval.

– We’re one of the earliest production projects to ship with Anthropic AI’s Claude.

We’re looking for someone experienced, and we’d expect this to be apparent through:

– Creativity, obsession with visual detail and consistency

– Respect for team and process

– A wide comfort zone

– Passion for the craft, eg: mentorship, Open Source contribution or speaking at events

You’ll work predominantly on the frontend, which is deployed to both the desktop and cloud versions of bloop. Our current stack is React, Typescript and Tauri.

We’re an international remote-first team of 7 with offices in London. Preference will be given to those on GMT+/-3 as we’re not an entirely async company and this leaves the necessary overlap to collaborate. We get together about three times per year in-person to hang out.

We just raised $7m from top funds, namely LocalGlobe, Khosla and Sands Capital as well as leaders in the field like Hamel Husain who led GitHub’s code search team. We also host one of the largest meetups on the subject, AI4Code London (https://ai4code-london.github.io/).

If you’d like to explore working with us, please reach out to me at louis [at] bloop [dot] ai with “HN Frontend Engineer” in the subject line and a note about why this is exciting and a link to your portfolio or linkedin/resume.

YC is hiring a product engineer to work on co-founder matching (SF/remote, US)

About two years ago, YC launched a site to help people find co-founders. We heard from a lot of people that the biggest thing holding them back from starting a company was that they didn’t want to do it alone and didn’t have any friends who wanted to do it with them.

So we built a site that’s similar to a dating site but for co-founders, and launched it on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27750298.

Like any new product, we weren’t sure how well this would work. Other people had tried this idea before, and none of them had really taken off. But we thought YC had some unique advantages in doing it.

Fast forward to now, and frankly it’s worked better than we dared hope. In the first two years, YC has invested in dozens of companies that came from people meeting each other on the site. We wrote about three of the early successes here: https://www.ycombinator.com/blog/does-co-founder-matching-wo…. We believe that in the long term, this could be how hundreds or even thousands of successful startups get started.

Right now, only two engineers are working on this which is a bit crazy, so we’d like to hire someone else to help us move faster. We use Rails and React, but you don’t have to have worked with Rails before as long as you have full stack web experience.

The majority of the team is in the SF Bay Area where the YC program runs. You don’t have to be in SF but unfortunately we can only hire people in the US at the moment.

YC offers highly competitive compensation and benefits, including equity in YC’s portfolio.

The most unique benefit though, is that as part of the YC software team, you basically get full access to the YC program, founders, and partners – from our bi-annual batch retreats in Sonoma to our weekly meetups in SF. You’ll learn the ins and outs of how YC works, and you’ll get to know hundreds of startup founders. If you think you might want to start a startup someday, working at YC would be an excellent jumping-off point.

If you’d like to work with us, there’s a formal job description here where you can apply (https://www.ycombinator.com/careers?ashby_jid=3d64f000-8d84-…) or just email me at jared@ycombinator.com. We’d love to hear from you!
