Senate advances bill to avert government shutdown after stripping Manchin energy permitting provision

A bill to avert a government shutdown cleared a key procedural hurdle in the Senate Tuesday after lawmakers stripped a proposal from Sen. Joe Manchin on energy permitting reform from the legislation.

By a vote of 72-23 the Senate agreed to proceed to debate on the temporary funding bill, which will keep government services operating until Dec. 16. This sets Congress on track to likely clear the bill through both chambers and send it to President Biden’s desk before government funding runs out midnight Friday.

MANCHIN ENERGY PERMITTING PROPOSAL STRIPPED FROM FUNDING BILL AFTER GOP, PROGRESSIVE OPPOSITION

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said that the Manchin, D-W.Va., proposal was the only sticking point in their chamber. And House Majority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., has been adamant his chamber won’t allow a government shutdown.

MANCHIN ‘DIDN’T EXPECT’ REPUBLICANS TO JOIN BERNIE SANDERS IN OPPOSITION TO ENERGY PERMITTING BILL

“It is unfortunate that members of the United States Senate are allowing politics to put the energy security of our nation at risk,” Manchin, said in a statement announcing he would ask Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to remove the permitting reform from the funding bill.

Schumer Tuesday said the Senate will come back to the energy permitting reform issue later this year, as per a deal he made with Manchin last month.

Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen have 'grown apart' after spending most of the summer living separately: report

Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen’s marital troubles are reportedly not due to infidelity.

According to a new report, while rumors of adultery are unfounded, the 45-year-old NFL star and the 42-year-old Brazil-born supermodel have recently “grown apart.”

“There is absolutely no accusation of cheating on either side,” an insider told Page Six.

“Tom and Gisele have recently struggled to make their marriage work and have grown apart,” the source claimed.

GISELE BÜNDCHEN ADMITS ‘CONCERNS’ OVER TOM BRADY’S RETURN TO NFL, SAYS SHE WISHES HE COULD BE ‘MORE PRESENT’

The source added that the embattled couple spent most of the summer living apart after taking a family vacation to the Bahamas with their son Benjamin, 12, and daughter Vivian, 9, in July.

Following their trip, Bündchen and the children spent three weeks at their home on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, but Brady did not join them.

In addition, Page Six reported that the seven-time Super Bowl champion vacationed alone in the Bahamas with Benjamin and Vivian during his 11-day break from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp in August.

“Gisele wasn’t there in August. It was Tom’s time alone with the kids,” the source noted.

The two, who have been married 13 years, reportedly have been trying to work through their issues but have been living separately with Bündchen living in New York while Brady has been staying in Florida to be close to his team.

Upon returning to camp, Brady had hinted at the pair’s marital woes during a press conference ahead of the Buccaneers’ first home game Sunday.

“It’s all personal, you know. Everyone’s got different situations that they’re dealing with,” the California native said.

“We all have really unique challenges to our life. I’m 45 years old, man. There’s a lot of s— going on, so just gotta figure out life the best you can. It’s a continuous process.”

Meanwhile, the source dispelled a previous report that the couple had an “epic row” over Brady’s decision to “unretire” from professional football in March.

“There wasn’t an epic fight,” the insider said.

“Gisele has no problem with Tom returning to football. She wants him to be happy and wants him to play if that is what he wants.

“There was never an ultimatum set down for Tom to choose between football or her. Their problems are more about the distance that has been created between them over a longer period of time.”

Previous reports had indicated that the couple’s rift stemmed from Bündchen’s disappointment over Brady’s decision to return to the NFL as she had hoped that he would spend more time with his family in retirement.

The Vogue cover star was also conspicuously absent from Brady’s game Sunday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

The game was attended by Benjamin and Vivian as well as Brady’s 15-year-old, whom he shares with ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan, 51.

The quarterback was seen sharing a sweet moment with his children in a video shared by the Buccaneers’ Twitter account. He stopped to hug Vivian and kiss her on the forehead and embraced his sons before taking the field.

“Gisele continues to be dedicated to her kids and is working on personal projects,” a source told People magazine.

The Buccaneers lost their home opener to the Green Bay Packers, 14-12.

Representatives for Brady and Bündchen did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Biden says Trump supporters not a threat to country after speech blasting 'MAGA Republicans'

President Biden on Friday said he does not consider any Donald Trump supporters to be a “threat” to the U.S., though he said the failure to condemn violence for political gains was “inappropriate.”

The president’s comments were in answer to a question from Fox News’ Peter Doocy who asked if Biden considered all Trump supporters to be a threat to the country less than a day after he blasted “MAGA Republicans” in a speech Thursday.

“You keep trying to make that case. I don’t consider any Trump supporters a threat to the country,” Biden said. “I do think anyone who calls for the use of violence, refuses to acknowledge an election…changing the way you count votes, that is a threat to democracy.”

Biden on Thursday said U.S. politics was in a battle between “equality and democracy,” claiming the GOP have assaulted those principles.

“As I stand here tonight, equality and democracy are under assault. We do ourselves no favor to pretend otherwise,” he said. “There’s no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans. And that is a threat to this country.”

Pence says he didn't take classified material, calls for 'unprecedented transparency' after Mar-a-Lago raid

Former Vice President Mike Pence said Friday that he did not take any classified information or materials with him after he left office in January 2021.

The comment comes as FBI officials found classified and “top secret” information among boxes of documents during a raid at former President Donald Trump’s private Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago last week. The raid was part of a larger investigation into whether Trump mishandled classified information or potentially violated the Espionage Act.

During an interview with the Associated Press, Pence was specifically asked if he retained any such documents or information.

“No, not to my knowledge,” Pence answered.

TRUMP MAR-A-LAGO RAID: FLORIDA JUDGE SAYS PORTION OF AFFIDAVIT RELATED TO RAID CAN BE UNSEALED

The former president, who some believe could be pursuing the Republican nomination for the presidency in 2024, said he would not rush to judge Trump over the FBI’s findings, however.

“I honestly don’t want to prejudge it before until we know all the facts,” Pence said about the raid. He also called for transparency by the Justice Department for the “unprecedented action.”

“The concern that millions of Americans felt is only going to be resolved with daylight,” he continued. “I know that’s not customary in an investigation. But this is unprecedented action by the Justice Department, and I think it merits an unprecedented transparency.”

TRUMP CALLS WASHINGTON POST ‘FAKE NEWS’ FOLLOWING REPORT CLAIMING HE’S ‘SCRAMBLING’ FOR LAWYERS AFTER FBI RAID

The former vice president also addressed Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney’s primary loss to Trump-endorsed challenger Harriet Hageman. Cheney is a vocal critic of Trump and is one of the Republicans on the House Committee Investigating the Capitol Riots on January 6th.

“The people of Wyoming have spoken,” Pence answered, walking his typical fine line of addressing the issue without speaking ill of his former boss or offending Republicans who supported her. “And, you know, I accept their judgment about the kind of representation they want on Capitol Hill.”

“And I appreciate the conservative stance Congresswoman Cheney has taken over the years,” he added. “But I’ve been disappointed in the partisan taint of the Jan. 6 committee from early on.”

LOCAL GOP LEADERS SAY IOWA’S ‘RETAIL POLITICS’ UNIQUELY APPEALS TO 2024 HOPEFULS

The committee has repeatedly called forth former Trump administration officials to testify on the events on Jan. 6, 2021, to determine if Trump played a role in advocating for an invasion of the Capitol building that resulted in several deaths.

Committee members have also sought Pence’s testimony before they wrap up their investigative report next month.

“Beyond my concerns about the partisan nature of the Jan. 6 committee, there are profound constitutional issues that have to be considered,” he said. “No vice president has ever been summoned to testify before the Congress of the United States.”

The interview came as Pence spent two days in Iowa, a state usually visited by potential presidential candidates as its caucus kicks off primary elections. Winners of the Iowa Caucus typically use that early momentum to bolster fundraising and gain polling leads that will help them in other state primaries.

John Fetterman returns to Senate campaign trail after health scare, contest with Mehmet Oz enters final months

Pennsylvania Senate candidate and the state’s Lt. Gov. John Fetterman is heading back to the campaign trail after health troubles sidelined him for more than 90 days.

Fetterman, 52, will host an event Friday evening in Erie County, Pennsylvania where the Democrat is expected to open up about a stroke he suffered in May that threatened his political aspirations as well as his life.

Campaign spokesman Joe Calvello said Fetterman’s return to the campaign trail will start with a few lower-profile events before ramping up his schedule.

“He’ll talk about how blessed he is to be back,” Calvello said. “It’ll be somewhat emotional — a little raw about what he went through, how grateful he is to be campaigning again.”

NEW POLL: DEM JOHN FETTERMAN LEADS MEHMET OZ IN PENNSYLVANIA SENATE RACE DESPITE POOR BIDEN APPROVAL

Fetterman’s recovery is also in question as he previously declined to take prescribed medication. “He’s following the doctor’s orders,” Calvello clarified, saying the Democratic candidate is also adhering to a low-sodium diet and is walking three to five miles per day.

“He’ll miss a word here or there when he’s speaking sometimes, or maybe in a crowded room he’ll miss hearing a word,” the spokesperson said. “Besides that, he’s rock solid.”

DR. MEHMET OZ CLAIMS DEMOCRATIC OPPONENT JOHN FETTERMAN ‘WAS LIVING OFF DADDY’S MONEY UNTIL HE WAS 46′

The return to the campaign trail comes as the Democrat is in one of the most contested senatorial races in the country, against Republican opponent Dr. Mehmet Oz, who has repeatedly drawn attention to Fetterman’s absence from the campaign.

“Have You Seen This Person?” Oz asked in a poster shared online last month. “It has been 90 DAYS since Fetterman’s last public campaign event. Pennsylvanians deserve answers.”

ELECTION SPOTLIGHT: DR. MEHMET OZ AND JOHN FETTERMAN SQUARE OFF OVER BIDEN PERFORMACE, ECONOMY

The Senate’s current 50-50 tie makes each senatorial race important for both parties but the Pennsylvania contest is especially consequential as it will fill the vacancy left by retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey.

The contest is already the most expensive senate race in the country and has featured major endorsements including one from former President Donald Trump, who backs Oz.

Fetterman’s absence from the campaign has not severely impacted the lead he holds over Oz in most polls as Fox News and Beacon Research have Fetterman up 11 points.

Other polling data shows a smaller gap between the candidates as Blueprint Polling and Suffolk University have Fetterman up 9 points, Fabrizio Ward has Fetterman up 6, and Cygnal has Fetterman up 4.

China to ramp up military drills around Taiwan after island hosts foreign head-of-state

China will ramp up its military exercises around Taiwan well into this week after the island hosted a foreign head of state Monday

China has been holding live-fire drills surrounding Taiwan for nearly a week since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island. Taiwan hosted St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, who insisted on flying to the island despite China’s ongoing show-of-force, on Monday.

“Prime Minister Gonsalves has expressed in recent days that the Chinese military drills would not prevent him from visiting friends in Taiwan. These statements have deeply touched us,” Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said in a welcoming ceremony.

Gonsalves ripped China as a “bully” in his own remarks. St. Vincent and the Grenadines is one of just over a dozen countries that has formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

FORMER CHINESE STATE MEDIA EDITOR SUGGESTS NANCY PELOSI BE ‘RESTRAINED,’ ‘PUNISHED’ BY CCP FOR VISITING TAIWAN

“As in our own hemisphere, the Western hemisphere, we do not like it and we do not support it when any powerful neighbor seeks to intimidate us or bully us,” Gonsalves said. “Wherever there are differences, we must settle them peacefully in a civilized manner.”

PELOSI TAIWAN TRIP: 4 US WARSHIPS POSITIONED EAST OF ISLAND

China’s ramped-up drills come days after the country announced it would hold “regular” military exercises on the Taiwanese side of the Taiwan Strait.

Chines leader Xi Jinping’s regime was furious with Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, arguing it broke the U.S. One-China policy.

The policy states that the U.S. acknowledges, but does not condone, China’s claim of sovereignty over the Taiwan. It also states that the U.S. will not keep formal diplomatic ties with the island’s government.

While President Joe Biden’s administration had advised Pelosi not to take the trip, the U.S. has made no apologies for her visit.

The U.S. has urged China not to overreact, however. South Korean airlines canceled flights to Taiwan this weekend as a precaution given China’s extensive military drills.

Trans cheerleader kicked out of camp after allegedly choking a female teammate

A transgender cheerleader who was born a biological male was kicked out of a Texas cheerleading camp and given a criminal citation after allegedly choking a female teammate.

“Well guys I’m officially retired as a cheerleader as of last night at 5:30 AM. A girl on the team was being very disrespectful and told me I am a MAN with a PENIS and that [guys] should not be on the team,” the cheerleader, Averie Chanel Medlock, wrote on Facebook last week. “I stood up for myself and she called her mom and dad because she was scared because I [stood] up for myself. Her father said ‘she still has testosterone and a penis and I will kill anyone who comes after my daughter.’”

The incident took place at Ranger College, where police responded to a dispute between the members of the team, according to Facebook posts from team members. Medlock alleges that a teammate made transphobic and racist remarks before the altercation, with cell phone video showing other cheerleaders hiding in a room from an agitated Medlock.

The father of the girl whom Medlock allegedly choked was also called to the scene by his daughter and he has begun pushing for police to release body camera and CCTV footage of the incident.

“I ask you what you would have done when receiving a phone call at 1 o’clock in the morning from your daughter stating they had locked themselves in the room with other girls,” the father, Mike Jones, wrote on Facebook. “At no time did I ever say anything about your race or your gender.”

Medlock asserts that the physical confrontation with the other cheerleader was actually a joke, but police on the scene gave the former cheerleader a criminal citation for assault and removed Medlock from campus.

The incident comes as debate continues to rage about transgender participation in female athletics, most recently in the case of University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas.

Thomas competed for the school’s male swim team between 2017 and 2020, but transitioned to compete with females for the 2021 season. Thomas became the first transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division 1 national championship in 2022, and has since been at the center of debate around transgender participation in sports.

The controversy has led to 18 states passing legislation that bans or limits transgender participation to the athlete’s birth sex.

Texas police discover bodies of 3 young sisters in pond hours after they were reported missing

Police discovered the bodies of three missing girls in a Texas pond on Saturday, hours after they had been reported missing.

The three girls, 9-year-old Zi’ariel Oliver, 8-year-old Amanda Hughes, and 5-year-old Temari Oliver were staying with a family friend while their mother was working. The friend reported the sisters missing at roughly 10 p.m. on Friday.

Police began searching the area and came across a pair of shoes sitting on the edge of a pond on a neighbor’s property. Investigators discovered the bodies of all three girls at the bottom at roughly 2 a.m. Saturday, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Circumstances of the girls’ deaths are under investigation, but police have not announced a criminal inquiry. The sisters’ bodies have been sent for autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The law enforcement search included elements of the local police, fire department and game wardens. Authorities say they discovered footprints in the mud near where the shoes were found.

The girls’ mother, who remains unnamed, confirmed that the shoes belonged to one of her daughters.

Authorities have indicated the girls’ deaths may have been an accident.

“That is unknown, whether they were swimmers or not. None of them had life jackets on, so I don’t know how strong of swimmers they were or if were swimmers at all,” Lieutenant Game Warden Jason Jones told KTAL.
