How to Check Business Credit Score: What You Need to Know

How to Check Biz Credit Score Credit SuiteHowever, before we dive into how to check business credit, there are a few things you need to know.  For example, there are a lot of companies that issue a credit score for your business.  Next, each company offers more than one report.  Lastly, these reports contain much more information than just the credit score.

Furthermore, there is no way to know which company a lender will use to check your business credit.  It could be all, one, or any combination. In addition, lenders actually apply their own formula to the information in the report to calculate a score that they feel is most useful to them.  As a result, they may not even use the score you see after you figure out how to check it.

Honestly, all of these things are out of your control.  What you can control, to a point, is the information on the report.  Like, does it contain positive information?  Is the information on it accurate?  See, these are things you can work with. If the information lenders are seeing is both positive and accurate, you should be in good shape. Still, you cannot do anything about the information on the reports unless you know how to check your business credit score.  Then, you need to understand what it means, how it is calculated, and how lenders use it.  So here we go.

How to Check Business Credit Score: Dun & Bradstreet

Basically, Dun & Bradstreet offers six different reports. For sure, the one utilized most often by lenders is the PAYDEX. Likely, this is due to the fact that it is the one most like the consumer FICO score. Similarly, it measures how quickly a company pays its debt on a scale of 1 to 100. Mostly, lenders like to see a score of 70 or higher.  To put it in perspective, a score of 100 reveals the firm makes payments ahead of time. A rating of 1 shows they pay 120 days late, or more.

Together with PAYDEX, they offer the following.

Delinquency Predictor Score

This rating determines the likelihood the company will not pay, will be late paying, or will come under bankruptcy. For scoring, the range is 1 to 5, with 2 being a good score.

Financial Stress Score

As you might imagine, this is a measurement of the stress on a firm’s balance sheet. It shows the possibility of shutting down within a year. The range is 1 to 5, and a 2 is good.

Supplier Evaluation Risk Rating

In contrast, this is a ranking that predicts odds of a firm surviving one year.  It ranges from 1 to 9, with a 5 being a good score.

Credit Limit Recommendation

As the name implies, this is a recommendation for the amount of debt a company can handle. Financial institutions usually use it to establish how much credit to extend.

D&B Credit Rating

This is an estimation of overall business risk on a scale of 4 to 1, where a 2 is considered good.  The smaller the number the better.  The rating is given in conjunction with letters, the combination of which shows a company’s net worth.

Consequently, if there isn’t enough data on a company to give it  a rating, an alternative score is assigned. This is called a credit approval score.  It is based on the number of employees. They will use any data they have available to calculate this alternative rating.  That means, a company can control this to a point by ensuring D&B has all of the information they need.

Commercial Credit Score

Along with the PAYDEX, Dun & Bradstreet releases a commercial credit report.  It has three parts. Each shows how likely the business is to default on expenses or become seriously late on payments.

Commercial Credit Score

On a range of 101 to 670, the commercial credit score anticipates the likelihood of a firm making late payments. A rating of 101 indicates it is very likely that this will happen. Likewise, a score of around 500 is good.

Commercial Credit Percentile

For this, the scale goes from 0 to 100. It shows the chance of delinquency too. However, it determines this versus other companies in the Dun & Bradstreet system. A rating of 1 is the highest possible probability versus other companies. The majority of loan providers believe a rating of 80 or higher is good.

Commercial Credit Class

Basically, this is an way of dividing businesses into classes based on the chance of delinquency. Firms in class 1 are the least likely to be overdue. Likewise, if you are in class 2, that’s great.

How to Check Business Credit Score: Experian Business Credit Scores

Experian gathers data from a lot of the same sources as Dun & Bradstreet. As a result, their reports are similar.  There are a few key differences in sources, calculation, and also presentation however.

Intelliscore Plus

For example, Experian uses the Intelliscore Plus credit score.  It shows statistics-based credit risk. As a result, it is a highly predictive score that can help users make well-informed credit decisions.

The Intelliscore scores range from 1 to 100, with a higher score indicating a lower risk class.

Score Range Risk Class

Low Risk 76-100
Low-Medium Risk 51-75
Medium Risk 26-50
High-Medium Risk 11-25
High Risk 1-10

Experian’s Blended Score

The blended score is a one-page report.  It provides a summary of the business and its owner.  A combined business-owner credit scoring model works better than a business or consumer only model.  In fact, blended scores typically outperform consumer or business scores alone by 10 – 20%.

Experian Financial Stability Risk Score (FSR)

FSR predicts the potential of a business going bankrupt or not paying its debts.  Consequently, this score identifies the highest risk businesses by using payment and public records. They look at a number of variables, some of which include:

  • high use of credit lines
  • severely late payments
  • tax liens
  • judgments
  • collection accounts
  • risk industries
  • length of time in business

How to Check Business Credit Score: The Equifax Service Credit Rating

Similarly, Equifax shows three different points on its corporate credit report. These include:

Equifax Payment Index

Similar to PAYDEX, Equifax’s payment index is a measurement on a scale of 100. It shows how many of your small business’s payments were made on time. Like the others, it uses data from both creditors and vendors. However, it’s not meant to anticipate future behavior.  In fact, that is what the other two scores are for.

Equifax Credit Risk Score

This score shows the likelihood of your company becoming severely delinquent on payments. Scores range from 101 to 992 and include an evaluation of:

  • Available credit limit on revolving credit accounts, including credit cards
  • Company size
  • Proof of any non-financial transactions that are late or were charged off for two or more billing cycles
  • Length of time since the opening of the oldest financial account

Equifax Business Failure Score

Equifax’s business failure score takes a look at the risk of your business shutting down. It runs from 1,000 to 1,600 and bases its scoring on these factors:

  • Total balance to total current credit limit in the past three months
  • The amount of time since the opening of the oldest financial account
  • Your small business’s worst payment status on all trades in the last 24 months
  • Proof of any non-financial transactions (like merchant invoices) which are late or are on a charge off for two or more billing cycles

For the credit risk and the business failure scores, a rating of 0 means bankruptcy.

Equifax Scores

A positive Equifax score for your business is as follows:

  • Payment Index 0 to 10
  • Credit Risk score 892 to 992
  • Business Failure score 1400 to 1600

Are These the Only Agencies That Issue Business Credit Reports?

In short, no.  Actually, there are a lot of other agencies that will issue a business credit score.  Furthermore, part of knowing how to check business credit score is knowing which company you need to check with.   These, however, are known as the big three.  If you want to view your whole report, including your score, you can pay for a credit report. Since these are the most commonly used, you need one from each of them. Still, there has been an increase in the use of another option recently.  It’s the FICO SBSS.

Keep your business protected with our professional business credit monitoring.

How to Check Business Credit Score: FICO SBSS?

First, the FICO SBSS is the business variation of your personal FICO credit report. However, unlike your personal FICO, the SBSS reports on a scale of 0 to 300. The higher the score the better. Still, the majority of loan providers demand a rating of least 160.

Exactly how is the FICO SBSS Scored?

Surprisingly, it is significantly different from other business credit scoring designs. For example, the SBSS utilizes your corporate credit score and individual credit rating. In addition, it makes use of monetary details like business assets and income. As you can see, the goal is to give an overall financial picture with one rating.

Business owners cannot access their FICO SBSS by themselves. There is a proprietary formula for score computations. FICO does not make that information public. The result is, you go into lending institutions blind as to what your FICO SBSS credit rating might be.

Furthermore, lenders can choose how certain factors are weighted in the computation of your score.  This means your FICO SBSS could actually be different from one lender to the next. For example, one lender could put more weight on your business payment history, while another could lean more on your personal credit score.

What does all of this mean?  It means that you actually cannot check your business credit score from FICO SBSS yourself.  The best you can do is handle your credit responsibly and make sure the other aspects of fundability are in order.  If all you put out there going forward is positive information, your FICO SBSS should follow suit and be positive as anything negative drops off over time.

How to Check Business Credit Score: Credit Monitoring

If you want to know how to check business credit score on an ongoing basis, credit monitoring is the answer. Typically, you can check your score at any time with a credit monitoring service.  Each of the big three has one, but you certainly save money with a third-party business credit monitoring option.  Also, you may be able to see your scores from more than one agency in one place.

How to Check Business Credit Score: What’s Important

Honestly, you have to know how to check business credit score.  However, even more importantly, you need to know how it is calculated, what it tells lenders, and how to fix it if it isn’t good.  Generally, high scores result in easier approval. So, if you do not have a high score, pay for a copy of your report and figure out why. Then, have mistakes corrected.  If the probably is payment history, then start now paying your obligations on-time, regularly.

Of course, if you have yet to set up your business as an entity separate from you as the owner, then you likely don’t even have an actual business credit report.  That’s right. Most likely everything is simply being reporting to your personal credit report.  If you and your business share contact information and a bank account, and if you are not incorporated, this is likely the case.  Get those things taken care of, and then you’ll be able to start the process of building business credit.

How to Check if Google Manually Reviewed Your Site

Do you know how Google decides what website should be ranked number 1, 2, 3 and so on for any given keyword?

Well, they have an algorithm for that.

But as you know, algorithms aren’t perfect. That’s why Google continually tries to improve it.

One way that they try to improve their algorithm is through Search Quality Raters.

What’s a Search Quality Rater?

Google knows that they can always make their search results
better. And one way is to have humans review their listings for any given
keyword.

So, all around the world, Google has
people who manually review websites
. And they review each website based on these
guidelines
.

It’s kind of long and extensive, but it is important that the Quality Raters don’t directly impact rankings.

Instead, they give feedback to the engineers who code up the algorithm so they can make it more relevant to searchers.

Now, the real question is, how do you know your site is
being reviewed?

First, I want you to log into your Google Analytics account and go to the audience overview report.

Then click on “Add Segment.”

Your screen should look something like this:

Then click on “+ New Segment.”

Your screen should look like the image above.

I want you to click “Conditions,” which is under the “Advanced” navigation label. Once you do that, fill out everything to match the screenshot below and click “save”.

Just make sure that when you are filling out the table you are clicking the “or” button and not the “and” button. And make sure you select “Source” for the first column.

Now that you’ve created the new segment, it’s time to see if
any Quality Raters have viewed your site.

How to spot Quality Raters

When you are in Google Analytics, you’ll want to make sure
you select the segment you just created.

If you copied my screenshot, you would have labeled it “Search Engine Evaluators.” And when you select it, you’ll probably see a graph that looks something like the image below.

You’ll notice that no Quality Raters have been to my site
during the selected date period, which is common as they don’t visit your site
daily and, in many cases, they don’t come often at all.

The other thing you’ll notice is that next to the “Audience Overview” heading, there is a yellow shield symbol. If your symbol is green, then that’s good.

Yellow means your data is being sampled.

If you see the yellow symbol, reduce your date range and you’ll eventually see a green shield next to “Audience Overview” like the image below.

In general, it is rare that Quality Raters view your site each month. But as you expand your time window, you’ll be able to spot them.

And once you spot them, you can shorten the date range so the data isn’t sampled and then drill down to what they were looking at on your website.

The key to analyzing what Quality Raters are doing on your site is to look at the “Site Content” report in Google Analytics and that will help you produce results that look like the screenshot above.

To get to that report, click on “Behavior,” then “Site Content,” and then “All Pages.”

What do I do with this information?

The goal of a Quality Rater is to help improve Google’s
algorithm
. And whether they have visited your site or not, your goal should
be to make your site the best site in the industry.

You can do so by doing the following 3 things:

  1. Follow the quality guidelines that Google has released. It’s 168 pages long but, by skimming it, you can get a good understanding of what they are looking for.
  2. Always put the user first. Yes, you want higher rankings, but don’t focus on Google, focus on the user. In the long run, this should help you rank higher as Google’s goal is to make their algorithm optimized for user preferences over things like on-page SEO or link building.
  3. Check out Google’s advice for beating algorithm changes. In that article, you’ll find a breakdown of what Google is really looking for.

Conclusion

If you have Quality Raters browsing your site from time to time,
don’t freak out. It doesn’t mean your rankings are going to go down or up.

And if you can’t find any Quality Raters visiting your site,
don’t freak out either. Because that doesn’t mean that you won’t ever rank well
in Google.

As your site gets more popular, you’ll notice a higher chance of Quality Raters visiting your site over time. This just means that you need to focus more on delighting your website visitors. Create the best experience for them and you’ll win in the long run.

So, have you spotted any Quality Raters in your Google Analytics?

PS: Special shoutout to Matthew Woodward who originally brought the Google Quality Raters segmentation to light.

Make Your List and Check It Twice: Building Business Credit Step by Step

Building business credit, step by step, is not as hard as it may seem at first glance.  It is, however, a process. There are specific steps that must be taken. These steps must be taken in order.  You can’t wrap a gift before you buy it, or even buy it before you know who you are buying for. During holiday seasons, you have to make a gift list.  Then you work from that list marking items or people off as you go. The same is true for business credit. You must take specific credit building steps, in order.  What are the steps?

10 Steps for Building Business Credit Step by Step

When making your holiday gift list, you not only need to know who to put on the list, but a little something about each one.  You have to know something about what they like, dislike, what size they wear, and more to have any inkling of what might make a nice gift for them.

Similarly, before you start working through building business credit step by step, you need to understand what business credit is and why you need it. For example, small business credit is credit in a company’s name. It doesn’t link to an entrepreneur’s personal credit.  This means, a business owner’s business and consumer credit scores can be very different.

Why do you need it?  Why is personal credit not enough? There are a few reasons.  First, because company credit is distinct from personal, it helps to protect a small business owner’s personal assets in the event of legal action or business bankruptcy.

In addition, consumer credit scores depend on payments, but also various other elements like credit utilization percentages. That means if your balances hover close to your limits on a regular basis, your score will suffer regardless of whether you make the payments you are supposed to.  Business expenses are higher by nature, meaning if you use personal credit for them your balances are naturally going to be higher. The result will likely be a higher credit utilization ratio and lower personal credit score.

Check out our best webinar with its trustworthy list of seven vendors to help you build business credit.

Now that you know what business credit is and why you need it, it’s time to start making your list so you know what steps to take, and in what order.

Step 1 in Building Business Credit Step by Step: Separate Contact Information

building business credit step by step Credit Suite

It is tempting for new business owners to simply use their own contact information.  It’s easy and its free. However, this will not work for business credit building purposes.  If you get credit accounts in your business name, but they have your personal contact information, those accounts are going to report information to your personal credit report. Your business needs its own phone number and business address.

Don’t worry, even if you run your business from your home or your home computer, you do not have to buy another building or even a separate phone.  There are a ton of online options for VoIP phone numbers that will forward to an existing number. There are even virtual offices that offer a physical mailing address along with other, optional features.  These may include messaging services, live receptionist services, meeting facilities, and more.

Be sure to list business information in the 411-business directory.  Do that here

Step 2 in Building Business Credit Step by Step: Get an EIN

If you apply for credit using your SSN, those accounts will report to your personal credit regardless of what name, address, or telephone number you use.  You can get an EIN from the IRS that works the same way an SSN does, but for your business.  Use your EIN to apply for credit in your business name instead of your SSN.

Step 3 In Building Business Credit Step by Step: Formally Incorporate

You have to incorporate.  There are many reasons to do this.  However, the main purpose when building business credit is to create a definitive separation between yourself and your business.  There are a few options.

  • C Corp

This is the most complicated and expensive option.  Before choosing it, be certain there are reasons other than establishing business credit that it needs to be done.  If it isn’t necessary for some other reason, there are other less complicated and less costly options.

  • S Corp

This option basically offers the same separation as the C Corp, but taxes are paid at the personal level, rather than requiring the business to be taxed as well.  That avoids the double taxation that corporations have. It is also cheaper than incorporating as a C Corp. If you aren’t required to file as a C corp, this is a good alternative.

  • LLC

Forming a Limited Liability Corporation results in less liability, but still offers enough separation to serve the purpose of establishing business credit.  If you are not required to be a C Corp or S Corp, this is the easiest and most cost-effective way to create the separation of business and personal credit needed.

Step 4 in Building Business Credit Step by Step: Get a D-U-N-S Number

Dun and Bradstreet (D&B) is the largest and most widely used business credit reporting agency.  You have to have the number to have a file with D&B. To have business credit, you definitely need a file with them.  The number is free on the Dun & Bradstreet website, but they will try to upsell you.  Stay strong and just get the number.

Step 5 in Building Business Credit Step by Step: Open a Separate Business Bank Account

Open up a separate, dedicated business bank account and use it exclusively for business transaction.  Intermingling business and personal finances can cause a host of problems. Having a separate business bank account will help you keep things separate for tax purposes.  It will also help creditors recognize your business as a separate entity from you as the owner.

Step 6 in Building Business Credit Step by Step: Professional Website and Email Address

You might think there is no way this should matter when it comes to the steps to building business credit.  However, if you do not have a website in today’s business world, you might as well not exist. Just having a website isn’t enough though.  It has to be professionally designed and put together. Don’t use free hosting either. Pay for hosting with a company like GoDaddy. Free hosting is not professional.

The email address goes along with the other contact information.  Don’t share your personal address with your business, but don’t use a free email service either.  Your business email address needs to have the same URL as your website.

Step 7 in Building Business Credit Step by Step: Establish Tradelines in the Vendor Credit Tier

Also known as starter vendors, these are the businesses from which you purchase the things you use day to day in your business. It may be inventory, raw materials, office supplies, or any number of things. They offer net 30 terms on invoices.  After you pay, they report those payments to the business credit reporting agencies. This is how you get accounts initially reporting to your business credit report and start building your score.

Step 8 in Building Business Credit Step by Step: Apply for Cards in the Retail Credit Tier

Once there are 5 to 8 or more vendor trade accounts reporting to at least one of the CRAs, you can start to apply for cards in the retail credit tier. These are cards from stores like Office Depot and Staples.  In this tier, you can only use the cards in the stores that issue them.

There are several options that report to various credit reporting agencies.  For example, Lowe’s reports to D&B, Equifax and Business Experian. They want to see a D-U-N-S and a PAYDEX score of 78 or more.  If you have handled your vendor credit properly, this will be no problem.

Check out our best webinar with its trustworthy list of seven vendors to help you build business credit.

Step 9 in Building Business Credit Step by Step: Move on to The Fleet Credit Tier

After there are 10 or so of these accounts reporting you can apply for cards in the fleet credit tier. These come from companies like BP and Conoco. They are limited to use for fuel and vehicle maintenance expenses.

Shell is another example of a company in this tier.  They report to D&B and Business Experian. You need a PAYDEX Score of 78 or more and a 411-business phone listing. They sometimes want a certain amount of time in business or minimum revenue. However, if you already have enough credit, that won’t be necessary.  If you follow these steps in order and handle your credit responsibly, you will have the credit you need to get approval.

Step 10 in Building Business Credit Step by Step: The Bow on Top is The Cash Credit Tier

At this point, if you have used your credit wisely, you can apply for cards in the cash credit tier.  They include cards from Visa, Discover, MasterCard and others that are not limited by location or type of expense.  Typically, they have higher limits and lower interest rates.

The Gift that Keeps on Giving: Monitor Your Business Credit

Your business credit can continue to help you run and grow your business indefinitely.  However, you are going to want to keep an eye on it. Make sure it is being reported and fix any mistakes as soon as possible. Not only that, but monitoring your credit reports is the only way to know when you have enough accounts reporting to move on to the next credit tier.

We can help you monitor business credit at Experian and D&B for 90% less than it would cost you at the CRAs. See: www.creditsuite.com/monitoring.

You can also monitor through the CRAs, but it will cost significantly more.  For example, at D&B you can monitor at: www.dandb.com/credit-builder. At Experian, go here:www.smartbusinessreports.com/Landing/1217/.

Monitor your account with Equifax here: www.equifax.com/business/business-credit-monitor-small-business. Experian and Equifax cost about $19.99; D&B ranges from $49.99 to $99.99.

Update Your Records

If you see something missing or out of date, be sure to update the information.  At D&B, you can do this at: https://iupdate.dnb.com/iUpdate/viewiUpdateHome.htm. With Experian, go here: www.experian.com/small-business/business-credit-information.jsp.  For Equifax, go here: www.equifax.com/business/small-business.

Correct Mistakes

You didn’t go through the trouble of building business credit step by step for nothing.  Don’t let simple mistakes ruin all your hard work. Errors in your credit report(s) can be taken care of. There is a particular way each reporting agency wants it done however.

Disputing credit report mistakes usually means you mail a paper letter with copies of any proof of payment with it. These are documents like receipts and cancelled checks. Never mail the original copies. Always mail copies and retain the originals.

Fixing credit report mistakes requires that you precisely detail any charges you challenge. Make your dispute letter as clear as possible. Be specific about the problems with your report. Use certified mail to have proof that you sent in your dispute.

Dispute an Equifax report by following the directions here: www.equifax.com/small-business-faqs/#Dispute-FAQs.

You can dispute inaccuracies on your or your business’s Experian report by following the directions here: www.experian.com/small-business/business-credit-information.jsp.

You Made Your List, Now Check it Twice

Now that you have a list of the steps you need to take to build business credit, you can start checking items off.  A lot of this you may have already taken care of. Some of it you may have thought it was too late to accomplish. For example, maybe you thought it was too late to worry about an address or phone number if you are already in operation using your own.

While many of these steps are easier to take while you are initially setting up your business, it is never too late to start building business credit step by step.  Start making that list and checking things off today. The sooner you start, the sooner you will have access to the business funding you need.

Check Out This Great Question from Residential Real Estate Agents: How Do I Build My Business Credit?

How Do I Build My Business Credit? Residential Real Estate Agents Ask This Question All the Time

Every entrepreneur asks this same question: how do I build my business credit?

Business credit is credit in a company’s name. It doesn’t link to a business owner’s consumer credit, not even when the owner is a sole proprietor and the sole employee of the company.

As such, a business owner’s business and consumer credit scores can be very different.

How Do I Build My Business Credit and Get The Advantages?

Due to the fact that business credit is separate from individual, it helps to safeguard a business owner’s personal assets, in the event of a lawsuit or business insolvency.

Also, with two distinct credit scores, a small business owner can get two separate cards from the same merchant. This effectively doubles purchasing power.

Another advantage is that even new ventures can do this. Going to a bank for a business loan can be a recipe for disappointment. But building small business credit, when done properly, is a plan for success.

Consumer credit scores rely on payments but also other components like credit utilization percentages.

But for company credit, the scores actually only hinge on if a business pays its invoices on time.

How Do I Build My Business Credit and Start The Process?

Growing company credit is a process, and it does not occur automatically. A small business has to proactively work to establish business credit.

However, it can be done readily and quickly, and it is much swifter than establishing consumer credit scores.

Merchants are a big part of this process.

Doing the steps out of order will lead to repetitive rejections. Nobody can start at the top with company credit. For example, you can’t start with retail or cash credit from your bank. If you do, you’ll get a rejection 100% of the time.

How Do I Build My Business Credit and Get Started with Small Business Fundability?

A small business needs to be fundable to lenders and vendors.

Hence, a business will need a professional-looking website and e-mail address. And it needs to have site hosting bought from a supplier like GoDaddy.

And also, company phone and fax numbers ought to have a listing on 411.com.

At the same time, the company phone number should be toll-free (800 exchange or comparable).

A business will also need a bank account dedicated solely to it, and it has to have all of the licenses essential for running.

Licenses

These licenses all have to be in the particular, accurate name of the small business. And they must have the same small business address and phone numbers.

So keep in mind, that this means not just state licenses, but potentially also city licenses.

Learn more here and get started toward establishing small business credit.

How Do I Build My Business Credit and Start Credibly Dealing with the Internal Revenue Service?

Visit the IRS web site and acquire an EIN for the small business. They’re totally free. Choose a business entity such as corporation, LLC, etc.

A business can begin as a sole proprietor. But they will most likely want to switch to a variety of corporation or an LLC.

This is in order to limit risk. And it will take full advantage of tax benefits.

A business entity will matter when it involves taxes and liability in case of a lawsuit. A sole proprietorship means the business owner is it when it comes to liability and taxes. No one else is responsible.

Sole Proprietors Take Note

If you run a company as a sole proprietor, then at the very least be sure to file for a DBA. This is ‘doing business as’ status.

If you do not, then your personal name is the same as the small business name. Consequently, you can end up being directly accountable for all small business debts.

In addition, according to the Internal Revenue Service, by having this structure there is a 1 in 7 chance of an IRS audit. There is a 1 in 50 possibility for corporations! Prevent confusion and significantly reduce the odds of an IRS audit at the same time.

How Do I Build My Business Credit and Set off the Business Credit Reporting Process?

Start at the D&B web site and obtain a totally free D-U-N-S number. A D-U-N-S number is how D&B gets a company in their system, to generate a PAYDEX score. If there is no D-U-N-S number, then there is no record and no PAYDEX score.

Once in D&B’s system, search Equifax and Experian’s sites for the business. You can do this at www.creditsuite.com/reports. If there is a record with them, check it for correctness and completeness. If there are no records with them, go to the next step in the process.

This way, Experian and Equifax will have activity to report on.

Vendor Credit Tier

First you must establish trade lines that report. This is also called the vendor credit tier. Then you’ll have an established credit profile, and you’ll get a business credit score.

And with an established business credit profile and score you can start to obtain credit in the retail and cash credit tiers.

These kinds of accounts often tend to be for the things bought all the time, like marketing materials, shipping boxes, outdoor work wear, ink and toner, and office furniture. This furniture could be particularly helpful to residential real estate agents.

But to start with, what is trade credit? These trade lines are credit issuers who will give you preliminary credit when you have none now. Terms are usually Net 30, rather than revolving.

Hence, if you get an approval for $1,000 in vendor credit and use all of it, you will need to pay that money back in a set term, such as within 30 days on a Net 30 account.

Net 30 accounts need to be paid in full within 30 days. 60 accounts must be paid in full within 60 days. In contrast to with revolving accounts, you have a set time when you have to pay back what you borrowed or the credit you used.

To launch your business credit profile the right way, you should get approval for vendor accounts that report to the business credit reporting bureaus. Once that’s done, you can then make use of the credit.

Then repay what you used, and the account is on report to Dun & Bradstreet, Experian, or Equifax.

Vendor Credit Tier – It Helps

Not every vendor can help like true starter credit can. These are vendors that will grant an approval with a minimum of effort. You also need them to be reporting to one or more of the big three CRAs: Dun & Bradstreet, Equifax, and Experian.

You want 5 to 8 of these to move onto the next step, which is the retail credit tier. But you may need to apply more than one time to these vendors. So, this is to demonstrate you are responsible and will pay timely. Here are some stellar choices from us: https://www.creditsuite.com/blog/5-vendor-accounts-that-build-your-business-credit/

How Do I Build My Business Credit and Get Benefits from Accounts That Don’t Report?

Non-Reporting Trade Accounts can also be helpful. While you do want trade accounts to report to a minimum of one of the CRAs, a trade account which does not report can still be of some worth.

You can always ask non-reporting accounts for trade references. And credit accounts of any sort will help you to better even out business expenditures, thereby making budgeting simpler. These are companies like PayPal Credit, T-Mobile, and Best Buy.

Retail Credit Tier

Once there are 5 to 8 or more vendor trade accounts reporting to at least one of the CRAs, then move onto the retail credit tier. These are companies like Office Depot and Staples, both of which have plenty of goods for sale which will help residential real estate agents.

Just use your Social Security Number and date of birth on these applications for verification purposes. For credit checks and guarantees, use the small business’s EIN on these credit applications.

One instance is Lowe’s. They report to D&B, Equifax and Business Experian. They want to see a D-U-N-S and a PAYDEX score of 78 or more.

Fleet Credit Tier

Are there 8 to 10 accounts reporting? Then move to the fleet credit tier. These are companies such as BP and Conoco. Use this credit to buy fuel, and to fix, and maintain vehicles. Only use your Social Security Number and date of birth on these applications for verification purposes. For credit checks and guarantees, make certain to apply using the company’s EIN.

One such example is Shell. They report to D&B and Business Experian. They need to see a PAYDEX Score of 78 or more and a 411 business phone listing.

Shell might say they want a specific amount of time in business or profits. But if you already have adequate vendor accounts, that won’t be necessary. And you can still get an approval.

Cash Credit Tier

Have you been sensibly managing the credit you’ve gotten up to this point? Then move to the cash credit tier. These are companies like Visa and MasterCard. Only use your SSN and date of birth on these applications for verification purposes. For credit checks and guarantees, use your EIN instead.

One example is the Fuelman MasterCard. They report to D&B and Equifax Business. They need to see a PAYDEX Score of 78 or higher. And they also want you to have 10 trade lines reporting on your D&B report.

Plus, they want to see a $10,000 high credit limit reporting on your D&B report (other account reporting).

Also, they want you to have an established business.

These are businesses such as Walmart and Dell, and also Home Depot, BP, and Racetrac. These are commonly MasterCard credit cards. If you have 14 trade accounts reporting, then these are in reach.

And there are tons of ways the business credit cards in the cash credit tier can help residential real estate agents.

Know what is happening with your credit. Make certain it is being reported and take care of any mistakes ASAP. Get in the practice of taking a look at credit reports and digging into the details, and not just the scores.

We can help you monitor business credit at Experian and D&B for 90% less than it would cost you at the CRAs. See: www.creditsuite.com/monitoring.

At Equifax, you can monitor your account at: www.equifax.com/business/business-credit-monitor-small-business. Equifax costs about $19.99.

Update Your Data

How Do I Build My Business Credit  and Fix My Business Credit?

So, what’s all this monitoring for? It’s to dispute any inaccuracies in your records. Mistakes in your credit report(s) can be fixed. But the CRAs often want you to dispute in a particular way.

Disputes

Disputing credit report errors typically means you mail a paper letter with copies of any evidence of payment with it. These are documents like receipts and cancelled checks. Never send the originals. Always mail copies and retain the originals.

Fixing credit report inaccuracies also means you specifically itemize any charges you dispute. Make your dispute letter as crystal clear as possible. Be specific about the concerns with your report. Use certified mail so that you will have proof that you sent in your dispute.

How Do I Build My Business Credit? A Word to the Wise

Always use credit smartly! Don’t borrow more than what you can pay back. Keep track of balances and deadlines for payments. Paying off on schedule and fully will do more to elevate business credit scores than nearly anything else.

Establishing small business credit pays off. Great business credit scores help a business get loans. Your lender knows the small business can pay its debts. They understand the company is bona fide.

The business’s EIN attaches to high scores and credit issuers won’t feel the need to demand a personal guarantee.
