Chicago police arrest suspect in murder of off-duty officer heading home from work

A man wanted in connection with the murder of an off-duty Chicago police officer last month has been taken into custody, according to Chicago police.

The department said its officers and the U.S. Marashals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 22-year-old Xavier Tate Jr. for first-degree murder in Glendale Heights, Illinois, on Wednesday night.

Tate’s arrest comes five days after he was identified as the suspect in the killing of 30-year-old Chicago police officer Luis Huesca.

“We ask that the people of this city continue to support the Huesca family by keeping them in your prayers as they continue to mourn the loss of a beloved son, brother and uncle,” CPD said in a statement.

Huesca was shot and killed in the early morning hours of April 21 in the Gage Park area as he was on his way home from work. He was still in his uniform, but was wearing other clothing on top, Chicago police superintendent Larry Snelling said.

He was shot nearly 20 times with a firearm modified into an automatic weapon, FOX 32 Chicago previously reported.

Huesca’s vehicle was stolen during the incident and found nearby a short while later. His service weapon and badge were not found at the scene, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times.

OFF-DUTY CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER SHOT, KILLED DRIVING HOME FROM WORK: ‘ANOTHER SAD DAY’

When Chicago police identified Tate as a suspect on April 26, video footage was released of him inside convenience stores and outside on a sidewalk.

Tate was previously arrested for criminal trespass to a residence on March 6 in Olympia Fields, FOX 32 reported, citing court documents. He was supposed to appear in court for that case last Wednesday.

Crime Stoppers, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, the FBI and the Fraternal Order of Police were offering a combined $100,000 reward for information leading to Tate’s arrest.

Huesca, who was killed two days before his 31st birthday, served with the Chicago Police Department for six years. He was laid to rest on Monday.

US faces 'inevitable' ISIS attacks at home following Moscow massacre: retired general

The former head of U.S. Central Command warned Sunday that the Islamic terror group ISIS has a “strong desire” to attack the U.S. and other foreign powers, a threat he suspects is growing.

Retired Gen. Frank McKenzie told ABC News’ “This Week” that U.S. officials should “believe them when they say that.”

“I think the threat is growing,” McKenzie said, noting threats from ISIS-K after the group took responsibility for a deadly attack in Moscow, Russia, last month that killed more than 140 people. The terror group also claimed responsibility for a mass bombing in Iran in January.

“It began to grow as soon as we left Afghanistan, it took pressure off ISIS-K,” McKenzie said, referring to the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from the country in 2021. “So I think we should expect further attempts of this nature against the United States as well as our partners and other nations abroad. I think this is inevitable.”

POLISH LEADER WARNS OF ‘PREWAR ERA,’URGES EUROPEAN NATIONS TO INVEST IN DEFENSE

McKenzie, who commanded U.S. forces in the Middle East, including the withdrawal from Afghanistan, said the U.S. holds a large enough military presence in Iraq and Syria to combat extremists in the region.

The retired general maintains that the U.S. should have kept a small troop presence in Afghanistan amid the exit instead of completely pulling out and ending the longest war in U.S. history.

President Biden previously claimed there would be an “over-the-horizon capability” to “act quickly and decisively” in Afghanistan, even with troops no longer stationed in the region.

McKenzie said the U.S. now has “almost no ability to see into that country and almost no ability to strike into that country,” which he says benefits ISIS and other terror groups.

“If you can keep pressure on them … in their homeland and their base, it makes it hard for them to conduct these types of attacks,” he said. “Unfortunately, we no longer place that pressure on them, so they’re free to gain strength, they’re free to plan, they’re free to coordinate.”

McKenzie said he believes “things would be different” and “we might actually be safer than we are” if the U.S. and its allies kept a small presence in Afghanistan, prolonging military involvement in the region.

The deadly attack in Moscow on March 22 highlights the threat of terror groups being able to regroup and plan large-scale operations, McKenzie said.

Despite the dangers, these efforts by the terror groups are more easily detectable, McKenzie said. The U.S. said it alerted the Kremlin to a possible terror plot weeks before that attack happened.

SWEDEN’S DEFENSE MINISTRY WARNING TO BRACE FOR ‘WAR’ SENDS PUBLIC INTO PANIC

“I think there was probably good opportunity for the Russians to have averted this attack had they actually listened to the material that was presented to them,” McKenzie said.

The suspects in the Moscow attack opened fire in one of the largest shopping and entertainment complexes in Russia before a fire broke out in the complex, according to the Russian Foreign Security Service.

A U.S. counter-terrorism official told the New York Post that ISIS-K terrorists could cross through the U.S. borders and carry out an attack similar to the one in Moscow. The official said ISIS is growing “bolder” and that its members may attempt to take advantage of the chaos at the southern border and seek out a “bigger” target.

“An attack on US soil is definitely a possibility,” the official said. “It would certainly send a message.”

McKenzie’s comments on Sunday also come after European leaders warned about the prospect of war.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called on European nations to step up investment in their defense, arguing that the continent is not ready for the current “prewar era.”

“I don’t want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept from the past,” he said in a recent interview with European newspapers before pointing to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “It’s real, and it started over two years ago.”

And in January, Swedish defense officials warned about potential war as the nation was close to joining NATO, which has officially happened.

“For a nation for whom peace has been a pleasant companion for almost 210 years, the idea that it is an immovable constant is conveniently close at hand,” Swedish Civil Defense Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin said at the time at Folk och Försvars, or “Society and Defense,” annual national conference in Sälen.

“But taking comfort in this conclusion has become more dangerous than it has been for a very long time,” he said. “Many have said it before me, but let me do so in an official capacity, more plainly and with naked clarity: There could be war in Sweden.”

Missing Virginia mom tells local reporter why she hasn't been home: 'I wish I could come back'

A Virginia mother who was reported missing earlier this month amid allegations of child abuse told a local news reporter that she and her three children are doing well.

A missing persons investigation began Sept. 13, after Lauren Cook failed to appear for a rescheduled court appearance in Franklin County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, authorities said. This was a rescheduled court appearance from a Sept. 5 date in which she did not appear.

Cook has been missing with her three children — 7-year-old Benjamin Cook, 5-year-old Hannah Cook and 2-year-old Elijah Cook. Her husband, Jordan Cook, said that his family was not missing.

DELIBERATIONS BEGIN IN YOUTUBE PRANKSTER STUCK IN JAIL ANYWAY

Lauren Cook, 30, spoke with ABC 13 News via a video call and over an app that can’t be tracked, the news outlet said.

“I just don’t have any solid answers yet as to what’s happening with this case,” she said.

She said everything began with an anonymous report to social services alleging child abuse, which she denies.

Despite an investigation, Cook said she was given legal advice that she could proceed with a pre-planned Labor Day vacation. She extended the trip after receiving legal advice, but was concerned that her children would be taken away.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said Cook and the children will remain listed as missing until they make in-person contact with authorities.

“The whole thing has me feeling a little paranoid about the situation with law enforcement,” Cook said. “Why do they need me to specifically come in-person with kids … when even the person that made the report is telling them that none of us are missing.”

“Of course, I wish I could come back,” she added. “It’s hard to not really able to come back, come back to your own home.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to authorities.

Jordan Cook said he and his wife have not missed any social service appointments. His attorney said the social services case was dismissed this week, the news outlet reported.

Texas plane crashes into two-story Georgetown home, injuring 3

A small plane crashed into a Texas home on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The two-story home in Georgetown was vacant at the time of the crash, which happened shortly before noon. All three people aboard the small plane were taken to a local hospital.

“We are currently working a plane crash on the 500-block of North Wood Drive,” the Georgetown Fire Department announced on Facebook.

“The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will begin their investigation this afternoon,” the post added. “Crews will remain on scene to assist.”

Padres' Juan Soto hits 910 feet of home runs amid trade speculation

If teams want to spend for Juan Soto, his price is escalating.

The San Diego Padres star blasted a pair of home runs Friday night that traveled a combined 910 feet in Detroit.

In Soto’s first at-bat, he launched a solo home run to give San Diego an early 1-0 lead.

That one traveled 447 feet, a preview of what was to come.

Two innings later, Soto came up to the dish again, this time with a man on base, and his second blast made the first one look like a Little League homer.

Soto hit a 463-foot opposite field home run at Comerica Park to give the Padres a 5-0 lead over the Detroit Tigers in the third inning.

Soto, naturally, was walked for the MLB-leading 93rd time his third plate appearance.

The 24-year-old outfielder was traded to the Padres last year in a blockbuster deal, and he helped them to the NLCS last year.

San Diego improved its already stacked roster by inking shortstop Xander Bogaerts to an 11-year, $280 million deal. The Padres also inked third baseman Manny Machado to an 11-year, $350 million extension, the fourth-largest in MLB history.

CARDINALS’ ALEC BURLESON EJECTED AFTER BLOWING UP ON UMPIRE WHOSE QUESTIONABLE CALLS LED TO DOUBLE PLAY

Despite all the moves, they have been one of baseball’s biggest disappointments.

Boasting a payroll of over $256 million with All-Stars all over the diamond, the Padres sit in fourth place in the NL West, entering play on Friday at 46-51.

The Padres have not decided whether they will sell at the Aug. 1 trade deadline. If they do, Soto is considered a top candidate to move.

Soto isn’t exactly playing like the MVP candidate he was expected to be. He’s hitting .266 this season after hitting .242 last year. He has 42 extra-base hits this year (23 doubles, 19 homers), and his .420 on-base percentage entering Friday is second-best in the majors.

Idaho murders suspect pulled over twice on cross-country race home with dad, lawyer claims

Bryan Kohberger, the suspected killer of four University of Idaho students who police arrested in Pennsylvania Friday, made the 2,500-mile road trip home with his dad and was pulled over twice along the way, according to his public defender.

Jason LaBar, Kohberger’s Pennsylvania defense attorney in the extradition case, did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment Monday.

However, he illustrated parts of the suspect’s cross-country race home in a televised interview, stating that Kohberger’s dad flew into Spokane, Washington, and then drove down to Pullman in a pre-planned trip ahead of the drive home ahead of the holiday break.

“I don’t know whether they were speeding or not or if they were even issued a ticket,” LaBar reportedly told NBC. “I just know that they were pulled over in Indiana almost back-to-back. I believe once for speeding and once for falling too closely to a car in front of them.”

IDAHO MURDER SUSPECT KOHBERGER’S PENNSYLVANIA CLASSMATES SAY HE WAS ‘BRIGHT,’ AWKWARD, BULLIED IN SCHOOL

An Indiana State Police spokesman told Fox News Digital he could not find evidence of any such encounters.

“We have examined records and do not find any record of any traffic stops or any interactions involving Bryan Kohberger, his father, or any Kohberger,” Sgt. Glen Fifield said Monday.

LaBar did not immediately clarify which jurisdictions the stops happened in.

Kohberger, 28, was a PhD candidate at Washington State University in Pullman, roughly 10 miles from the University of Idaho in Moscow. The two communities lie just across state lines from one another.

Classes ended at WSU on Dec. 15 and the following day at UI. It was not immediately clear when Kohberger left Pullman, but he returned to Albrightsville, Pennsylvania by Dec. 17, according to LaBar.

CRIMINOLOGIST GRAD STUDENT HIT WITH FOUR COUNTS OF FIRST-DEGREE MURDER

Police allege that sometime between 3 and 4 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2022, Kohberger entered a six-bedroom house and attacked four students in their sleep with a knife.

The ambush killed Maddie Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, 21-year-old best friends, as well as their housemate Xana Kernodle and her boyfriend Ethan Chapin, both 20.

Two other young women on the home’s bottom level were left alone, according to police.
Kohberger has a master’s degree from DeSales in criminal justice and was studying at WSU’s department of criminal justice and criminology.

UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO MURDERS TIMELINE: WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE SLAUGHTER OF FOUR STUDENTS

Pennsylvania police arrested him on Friday after Idaho authorities charged him with four counts of first-degree murder and another charge of felony burglary for allegedly entering a residence with intent to commit murder.

In Washington, investigators searched his apartment for hours on the same day, removing boxes and bags of evidence as well as a desktop computer.

Kohberger is expected to waive extradition Tuesday and return to Idaho to face the charges.

Through his attorney, he said he expects to be exonerated.

However John Kelly, a criminal profiler and psychotherapist who has interviewed multiple serial killers, told Fox News Digital Monday that if Kohberger did commit the crimes, he made a series of key errors, especially for someone with an education focused on criminology.

“Flight can be a sign of guilt,” Kelly said.

But other mistakes include the indoor crime scene – virtually impossible to clean up, attacking so many people at once with a knife and allegedly believing he could avoid leaving behind evidence.

Houston cat without a home is hoping to be scooped up by a loving family for the holidays

A tiny tuxedo kitten in Texas is ready to go home for the holidays.

Four-month-old Ophelia is currently available for adoption at Best Friends Animal Society in Houston.

Ophelia was originally rescued by Sugar Land Animal Shelter in Sugar Land, Texas.

NEW YORK BANS THE SALE OF DOGS, CATS AND RABBITS AT RETAIL PET STORES

Best Friends Animal Society told Fox News Digital that Ophelia is stealing people’s hearts “left and right.”

The group mentioned the cat’s notable markings on her black-and-white fur that give the appearance of the “cutest” white mustache.

“She is a very sweet girl and loves to play with her kitty friends,” the shelter said.

CAT WITHOUT A HOME, NAMED MS. CRABTREE, NEEDS A NEW FAMILY TO LOVE HER

“She also enjoys her squeeze-up treats, too!”

While pets are always an exciting gift to receive during the holidays, Best Friends Animal Society is encouraging animal lovers to choose adoption.

In a press release, Best Friends Animal Society CEO Julie Castle explained that adopting instead of shopping this season can help divert money away from the “inhumane puppy mill industry that churns out millions of puppies annually.”

“Not everyone considers this, but where gifted pets come from can either help or hurt efforts to end the killing of pets in shelters,” Castle said.

“I encourage everyone to adopt rather than buy a pet from a breeder, pet store or online retailer,” she also said.

Best Friends Animal Society is a leading national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters, the group says on its website. It works with shelters, rescue groups and members nationwide.

Anyone who may be interested in adopting Ophelia can email the group at houstonadoption@bestfriends.org or call (832) 342-9411.

Max Verstappen wins F1 Dutch Grand Prix in home country for second straight year

Max Verstappen gave his home Netherlands fans what they wanted on Sunday in the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.

The Red Bull Racing leader, who already had a large lead in the 2022 F1 driver standings with 284 points coming into this race, took home the victory with his home fans watching.

“It’s always special to win your home GP. This year I had to work for it even more. An incredible weekend and I’m really happy we got the Dutch GP.”

MAX VERSTAPPEN WINS BELGIAN GRAND PRIX AFTER F1 STAR STARTED FROM 14TH POSITION

Red Bull’s Helmut Marko came into this match saying the Mercedes team was “very strong,” but “the start is essential.”

Verstappen was at the first starting position followed by Leclerc, Carlos Saintz, Hamilton, Sergio Perez and Russell. And while it was a back-and-forth jostle for first place, Verstappen’s strategy with his Red Bull team worked out.

“It was not a straightforward race but we had to push, of course with safety car, virtual safety car, making the right calls,” he said.

RED BULL’S MAX VERSTAPPEN WINS F1 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Verstappen keeps his win streak alive, pushing it to four straight races now and his 10th win on the season. Verstappen won last year’s Dutch Grand Prix as well.

There was some drama from the Mercedes camp in this race, though, regarding Hamilton and Russell. Hamilton was leading toward the end of the race, but Russell wanted soft tires on his car in a pit stop. Mercedes allowed that to happen, and Hamilton was audibly ticked off on the team’s radio.

The move left Hamilton exposed in first place and he ended up dropping all the way back to fourth in the end.

“I can’t describe how p—– I am,” he said over his team radio via Sky Sports.

But it seemed that Hamilton cooled down a little bit later.

“To all the mechanics, fantastic job today,” he said. “Those are the best pit stops we’ve had all year, so thank you for the continued efforts. Let’s keep pushing. We’ll still get points today.”

“We like to keep it close, you know, always,” Russell said after the race on the podium regarding his passing of Hamilton toward the end.

Verstappen’s lead in the F1 standings moves to 109 points, which is an extremely comfortable margin.
